Winter Hat For Polar Bear and Friends

crochet bears wearing hats and scarves

Free Patterns,
This is the hat and scarf pattern for the Polar Bear and Friends. The bear pattern is here. Scroll down this page for the hat and scarf pattern.

Supplies:
use the same brand and weight yarn you used to make the bear with
4mm hook
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
reverse sc = reverse single crochet
f/o = finish off

How to read the rows: Mark off the last stitch of the row then move that marker at the end of each row. Each row has a sequence. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that particular row. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

1) magic circle  with 7sc (7)
2) 1sc in each st for 1 row

28-30) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
31) reverse sc in each st for 1 row - tutorial for this row here.
f/o then use the yarn tail to connect the 1st and last st, make it as straight as possible then weave in yarn tail.

Pom Pom: not suitable for small children due to choking hazard
Wrap yarn around 3 fingers about 40 times. Carefully remove the bundle from your fingers, tie of the center and pull tight. Cut through all the loops, careful not to cut the tie off strings as those will be used to tie the pom pom to the hat.  Trim until you have the shape and look of a pom pom. Tie to the tip of the hat.

Scarf:
1) ch47
2) starting in the 3rd ch, 1hdc in each ch (45) ch1 and turn
3) skip ch, 1sc in each st (45)
f/o and cut the yarn tails to desired length then add in 4 or 5 more strands of yarn on each end of the scarf, tie them off. Trim then unravel the strands and use your yarn needle to split them.

  1. I finished my best this morning! Now I'll work on the hat and scarf! Thank you so much!

  2. Absolutely love your designs! On row 8 of the hat I can only get 11 stitches. SC 4, then 2 in one stitch making 6 then only 5 left making 11. Am I doing something wrong?

    2. I'm glad you got it figured out! There's a little section above the start of the pattern that explains how to read the rows. I leave out the word repeat, as it would drive me batty to see that word in every line, lol
      You repeat the sequence given to the marker. If you're reading a row, like the rows at the beginning, the instructions take you right to the marker. I hope that helps!
