Rosey The Monkey and Friends With Egg and Without!

Rosey, a special monkey that stores treasures inside her belly!

I first introduced Rosey the Monkey just before Easter this year. If you missed it, view  here, she's a real cutey! She's a special amigurumi since she can double as a hiding place for small treasures or seal her up with a small handful of buttons or beads inside and she'd make great rattle!

You can make a solid body without the egg,
Shortly after making Rosey I realized many of you would want to make her but maybe without the egg inside so I decided it would be best to provide patterns for both. The pattern for the body with the egg is written first and the body without the egg is written last. The limbs, tail, face and ears are the exact same for both monkeys.

Supplies:

Yellow Monkey Red Heart Comfort yarn in Bright Yellow 3182 and Butter 3198
Pink Monkey Red Heart Comfort yarn in Light Pink 3133 and Shocking Pink 3194
of course you can choose any colors you like!
4.0 mm hook - use a smaller hook if you crochet fairly loose
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
100% polyester stuffing
2 buttons for eyes
1 plastic Easter egg similar in color to the yarn used to make the body (C = 5.5" or see size pictured below)
no egg needed if you make a solid body
a small amount of polyester stuffing
emery board or sand paper
fabric fusion or tacky glue
8 pipe cleaners similar in color to the yarn you use

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
2tog = crochet 2 stitches together
f/o = finish off

IMPORTANT -
Make all the monkey parts first. The limbs and tail need to be sewn on before the egg is glued in place. Using the emery board or sand paper rough up the entire egg, making sure you rough up all around the edges.

Magic ring:
Many parts of this amigurumi begin with a magic ring. I have 2 short video tutorials that will show you 2 different methods of making a magic ring. Use the one that is easiest for you. View 1st method here and 2nd method here.

How to read the rows:
Add a maker at the end of row 2 and move that marker each time you finish a row. Each row has a sequence. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that row. When you land on the marker you should be putting in 2sc. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

Monkey parts are for both the monkey with egg and without:

Ears: make 2 with lighter color
1) magic circle  with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12) crochet around starting yarn tail
3) sl st next 3st and f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Ears can be sewn on anytime before or after you stuff the head. I prefer after the head is stuffed and the arms are sewn on so I can use them as a guide. The ears are in line with the arms. I also find it easier to pin the ears on then sew them on.

Muzzle:

1) ch8 with darker color or red
2) starting with the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in next 6st then switch colors on last st (7)
3) now continue on the other side of the chain working in the next 7 outer loops. It is very easy to miss the first outer loop so make sure you get into that one. (14) this stitch count includes both sides, add a marker in the last st you put in.
4-5) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
6) (we only use 9st of this row) 1sc in next 8st then sl st next st, f/o leaving a long tail for sewing.

Arms and Legs: make 4 starting with darker color

1) magic circle with 7sc (7)
2-5) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
6) switch colors on first st, sl st the next st then 1sc in next 5st (7) Some people find a sl st difficult in small rounds so if you can't sl st, don't worry just put in 1sc. If you don't sl st then you will need to knot off the color changes.
7-17) 1sc in each st for 11 rows
f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Stuff each limb with a folded pipe cleaner, the legs can have 2 folded pipe cleaners each but it's not necessary as one each will do fine. Make sure to loop the ends so no sharp points ever poke through.

Tail: starting with darker color
1) magic circle  with 7sc (7)
2-5) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
6) switch colors on first st, sl st the next st then 1sc in next 5st (7) if you find a sl st difficult, don't worry just put in 1sc instead, you can do this for rows 10 and 14 as well. Remember to knot off color changes if you don't sl st.
7-9) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
10) switch colors on first st, sl st next st, 1sc in next 5st (7)
11-13) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
14) switch colors on first st, sl st the next st then 1sc in next 5st (7)
15-24) 1sc in each st for 10 rows
f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Stuff the tail with 2 folded pipe cleaners. Make sure to loop the end so no sharp points ever poke through. Sew the tail to the back of the body

Head and Body for the Monkey With Egg:

Starting at the top of the head with darker color:

1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5) switch colors on first st, sl st next st then 1sc in next 22st (24)
6-11) 1sc in each st for 6 rows
sew in the button eyes now, choose the opposite side of the color change so that when you look at the monkey's face any color jumps will be on the back of his head. Put the buttons on the 7th and 8th row with 4 visible stitch holes between them. I add a dot of glue behind the button before pulling the thread tails tight.
12) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (18)
you can sew the muzzle on now. Make sure there is one full row between the bottom edge of the muzzle and the bottom edge of row 12. You need space to continue crocheting after the muzzle is sewn on. Sew all the way around but stuff the muzzle before completely sewing closed. Take your time, this part can be a bit finicky.
13) 1sc then 2tog (12) stuff head, shape as you stuff
14) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9)
15) 2sc in each st (18)
16-20) 1sc in each st for 5 rows
For a slightly lighter weight yarn you might need to add one more row. Place the top half of the egg inside the body when you have finished row 20 and see if the bottom edge of row 20 reaches the edge of the egg and the egg is completely inside the body, you might have to stretch it a bit. If it doesn't reach then add one more row.
sl st next st and f/o. Weave in yarn tail.

Bottom of body with lighter color:

1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4-7) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
sl st next st and f/o. Weave in the yarn tail
sew legs and tail on before putting the bottom half of the egg in the body.

Notice pictured below the bottom half of the egg's edge is just above the crochet edge. Look at the egg and how it closes, the bottom half of the egg has a ridge and you want to be sure that ridge is fully exposed to the line. The top half of the egg should be all the way inside the top half of the body.

Do not have any glue puddles when you push the egg in, this will cause glue to seep through the body.

Do not to put the halves together until the glue is dry or you could end up gluing the halves together.

Head and Body for the Monkey Without the Egg:

Starting at the top of the head with dark yellow:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5) switch colors on first st, sl st next st then 1sc in next 22st (24)
6-11) 1sc in each st for 6 rows
sew in the button eyes now, choose the opposite side of the color change so that when you look at the monkey's face any color jumps will be on the back of his head. Put the buttons on the 7th and 8th row with 4 visible stitch holes between them.
12) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (18) you can sew the muzzle on now.
16-22) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
23) 1sc the 2tog (12) stuff the body. Be sure that you have enough stuffing in the head and neck area and there are no holes or gaps in the stuffing
24) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9) stuff more as needed
25) 2tog twice and f/o leave a bit of a tail for closing up the gap. Using a yarn needle weave in and out of the remaining st, pull tight to close. Knot off and hide yarn tail inside body

  7. Sharon thanks for your hard work and I did something just a little different on the attaching the arms after first monkey. I attached mine while making the body after muzzle and I attached it as I went along one row under neck as you have done only crocheting in place, then continued to finishing up the body with no egg. The first one the five year old managed to get arm off even it being double tied. I hope you don't mind the different way I did the arms.

    Again thanks
