Junior Asparagus Free Crochet Pattern


 Junior is the Asparagus from Veggie Tales. I designed this doll for my kids and I'm sharing the pattern with you. I hope you enjoy! Scroll down this page for the written pattern. For video tutorial click here!

st = stitch
sc = single crochet
BLO = back loops only
2tog = 2 stitches together
ch1 = chain one
dc = double crochet
F/O = finish off

Special notes: I worked in continuous rounds with a 3.75mm hook and worsted weight yarn. Have any questions or if you come across a mistake in the pattern please leave a message in the comment section below.

BODY:
1) magic circle with 6sc(6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st, 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in next 3st, 2sc in next st (30)
6-7) 1sc in the BLO for 2 rows (30)
8-27) 1sc in each st for 20 rows. Switch to darker green on very last stitch(30)
28) 2sc in each st (60)
29-32) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
33) 1sc in next 4st, then 2tog (50)
34) 1sc in next 3st, then 2tog (40)
35) 1sc in each st
36) 1sc in next 3st, then 2tog (32)
37-38) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
39) BLO 1sc in next 2st, then 2tog (24)
40) BLO 1sc in next st, then 2tog (16)
Stuff as you go
41+) 2tog until you close the gap

Now make the eyes and eyelids. You want to sew those in place before you put on the hair pieces.

EYES:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in next 4st, 3sc in next 3st, 1sc in next 5st (18)
4) 1sc in each st
sl st to next st and finish off

EYELIDS:
Ch 18 or so, F/O and sew around eye from top corner to bottom corner


NOSE:
1) magic circle with 4sc (4)
2) 2sc in each st (8)
3-4) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
finish off, stuff and weave tail in and out along the edge then pull the hole closed. Sew into place

pupils and mouth are cut from felt and hot glued into place

HAIR PIECES: make 4
1) ch7
2-16) starting with 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each for 15 rows
17) 2tog 3 times F/O leave long tail for sewing

make 4
1) ch9
2-17) starting with 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each for 16 rows
18) 2tog 4 times
19) 2tog 2 times F/O leave long tail for sewing

Sew the larger hair pieces on first. 1 on each side of eye, and one front and center above the eyes and 1 in the back center. Sew around the edges leaving a small gap at top for stuffing. Stuff then sew the gap closed. Insert a long strand of yarn about the quarter of the way from bottom of hair piece and wrap it across to the other side, go back into the head and back out from where you went in. Pull the yarn tight to cinch it. Do this about 3 times for each hair piece.

Sew the smaller pieces over the gaps in between the larger pieces. Follow the same steps as above.


HAT: with yellow
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st, 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in next 3st, 2sc in next st (30)
6) 1sc in next 4st, 2sc in next st (36)
7) 1sc in next 5st, 2sc in next st (42)
8) 1sc in next 6st, 2sc in next st (48)
9) 1sc in next 7st, 2sc in next st (54)
10-16) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
do not F/O switch to red on next st
1-3) 1sc in next 16st for 3 rows
remember to ch1 and turn at the end of every row
4) 2tog, 1sc in next 12st then 2tog
5) 2tog, 1sc in next 10st then 2tog
6) 2tog, 1sc in next 8st then 2tog7) 2tog, 1sc in next 6st then 2tog
8) 2tog, 1sc in next 4st then 2tog
9) 1sc in next 6st F/O
10) insert red on the corner of brim and put 1sc around the edge of brim, sl st into the last st on the other corner of brim and F/O. weave in ends


If you add the yellow strands as I did, put them on before adding the bottom chain and red button


With yellow chain a length that will go all the way around the bottom edge of hat. F/O and sew or hot glue to bottom edge

Red Button on Hat
1) magic circle 4sc
2) 2sc in each st. sl st to next st and F/O.
Hot glue or sew it to the top of the hat.
