Supplies:
Basic OG LBF body pattern found here
same yarn and hook you used to make the body with
a smaller hook for the inner ears. For example: I used a 4.25mm hook for the outer ears and a 3.5mm hook for the inner ears. You can skip the inner ear and glue on felt or leave them one color.
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors

Eyes: safety eyes go in between the 7th and 8th row with about 3 visible stitch holes between them.
Feel free to use anything you want for eyes and place anywhere you wish. You can use buttons, felt, paint, safety eyes, wrap yarn, or crochet them. The eyes you see pictured are 7mm. For one hippo I glued a small piece of white felt behind them before I installed the eyes. polyester stuffing

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
ch1 = chain one
sl st = slip stitch
2tog = crochet 2 stitches together
f/o = finish off

How to read the rows: Each row has a sequence as given below. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that particular row. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

The basic body pattern is found here

Muzzle:

1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st, 2sc in next 2st, 1sc in next 7st, 2sc in next 2st, 1sc in next 5st (22)
5-7) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
8) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog, repeat 5times then 2tog (16)
9) 1sc in each st for 1 row
sl st next st and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing
Before stuffing the muzzle add the nostrils and mouth. The nostrils are wrapped around the 3rd row with about 3 visible stitch holes between them. The mouth is in between the 2nd and 3rd row. Knot the yarns tails inside the muzzle and tuck the yarn tails inside.
The top edge of the muzzle is sewn to the 10th row and the bottom is on the 13th. Pin the muzzle on first, use lots of pins. Make sure the muzzle stays centered as you sew. Take your time!

Outer Ears: make 2 with body color
1) magic circle with 7sc (7)
2) 2sc in each st (14)
sl st next st and f/o leaving a tail for sewing.

Inner Ears: make 2 with alternate color and smaller hook. Inner ears are optional.
1) magic circle with 5sc (5)
2) 2sc in each st (10)
sl st next st and f/o

I used hot glue to attach the inner ear to the outer ear. If you choose to do the same, be careful, that glue is hot! The ears are sewn or glued with wrong sides together. Once you have them together, sew the bottom edges of the outer ear together, this shapes the ear. Knot off and use the yarn tail to sew the ears to the head.

Tail:
1) ch4 begin with a yarn tail long enough to sew into the body.
f/o, pull tight and cut the yarn tail to about a 1/4 inch and fray it.

Toes:
You can add these after the legs are sewn in place. Bring a white strand of yarn through the center hole of row 1, come out in between the 3rd and 4th row then wrap twice around the 4th row. Bring the yarn needle back into the foot and over just a bit then wrap the next toe. Add 4 then bring the yarn needle back through the center hole of row 1, knot the yarn tails, then push the knot into the foot to hide it.

You're done! I hope you enjoyed making this little hippo.

    1. there is a supplies list on the clothing page, when you go to the pattern, scroll slowly down the page to see all the information available to you.

      This is written in the supplies list
      "use the same hook size you used to make your Little Bigfoot with"

      If you used a 4mm hook for the body then use a 4mm for the clothes.

    2. you can use any size hook and yarn for the bodies, just be sure to use the same hook for the clothes. You can even use a bigger hook for the clothes. I hope that helps!
