Fly With Egg and Without

I know many of you will be wondering what the heck, why a fly?! And if you thought that then you have to catch up! Read why you'll need a fly on Frog Catches Flies and also on The Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly.

Each one of those patterns will need 2 flies each.

And I've included a pattern for how to make the fly without the egg inside too. You really don't need to use the egg for this pattern. I made the fly with the egg inside because I thought it was more fun to fill the flies with candy. I did this at Easter time. The frog ate the flies and the flies had chocolate inside them which the kids found to be great fun!

I put buttons in for this picture because my kids ate all the candy!

The fly without the egg is the exact same size as the fly with the egg so both will work with the Frog and the Old Lady.

Please read through all the instructions and information I've provided first, this will help you along as smoothly as possible.

Supplies:
Red Heart Super Saver in Black, Cherry Red and White
4.0 mm hook - use a smaller hook if you crochet fairly loose
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
1 tiny plastic Easter egg (C = 4" or see size pictured below) Use a dark colored egg.
emery board or sand paper
fabric fusion or tacky glue
no egg, no sand paper and no glue needed if you make a solid body
a small amount of polyester stuffing if you make the solid body

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
2tog = crochet 2 stitches together
f/o = finish off

Magic ring:
Many parts of this amigurumi begin with a magic ring. I have 2 short video tutorials that will show you 2 different methods of making a magic ring. Use the one that is
easiest for you. View 1st method here and 2nd method here.

How to read the rows:
Add a maker at the end of row 2 and move that marker each time you finish a row. Each row has a sequence. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that row. When you land on the marker you should be putting in 2sc. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

IMPORTANT - The wings have to be sewn in place and also the eyes stitched in before the egg is glued in. Using an emery board or sand paper rough up the entire egg, making sure you rough up all around the edges or the glue will not hold.

Wings: make 2 with white - these are for both the fly with and without the egg
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 1sc then 2sc in next st (9) - work the starting yarn tail into this row
sl st and f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Sew the wrong sides facing each other

Top Half of Fly
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3-6) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
sl st and f/o. Weave in yarn tail
using red put the eyes in. I wrapped the yarn around the 3rd row about 7 times for each eye. Sew the wings to the 5th row

Bottom Half of Fly:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc in next 5st then 2sc in next st (14)
4-6) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
sl st and f/o. Weave in yarn tail

1) Do not have any glue puddles when you push the egg in, this will cause glue to seep through the body and it will be very visible on black yarn.
2) Notice pictured below the bottom half of the egg's edge is just above the crochet edge. Look at the egg and how it closes, the bottom half of the egg has a ridge and you want to be sure that ridge is fully exposed to the line.
3) The top half of the egg should be all the way inside the top half of the body. You might have to stretch the top half a bit to get the edges even with the edge of the egg. Once it's glued in check on it after 10 minutes to see if the edges are still even and it hasn't pulled back up.
4) Do not to put the halves together until the glue is dry or you could end up gluing the halves together

Pattern For the Fly Without The Egg:
The wings and the eyes are the same as for the fly with the egg.

Fly Body:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc in next 5st then 2sc in next st (14)
4) 1sc in each st for 1 row
5) 1sc in next 6st then 2sc in next st (16)
6) 1sc in each st for 1 row
put the eyes in. I wrapped red yarn around the 3rd row about 7 times for each eye.
7) 1sc in next 7st then 2sc in next st (18)
sew the wings onto the 5th row.
8) 1sc in each st for 1 row
9) 1sc in next 4st then 2tog (15)
10) 1sc in next 3st then 2tog (12)
11) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9)
stuff the fly, shape as you stuff
12) 2tog twice and f/o. Weave in and out the remaining stitches. Before you pull tight to close the gap stuff the fly as needed. Pull tight and knot off. Hide the yarn tail in the body.
