st = stitch
sc = single crochet
2tog = 2 stitches together

ch1 = chain one
sl st = slip stitch
f/o = finish off

What I used to make Totoro:

grey bulky yarn
cream color or off white worsted weight yarn medium #4
5.00 mm hook
3.75 mm hook (tummy piece)
Pieces of Felt (eyes)
4.5 mm black safety eyes (glued in place)
yarn needle
hot glue

Special notes: I worked in continuous rounds with a 5.00 mm hook and bulky yarn. I used the same pattern as I did for the Blue Totoro and the size difference comes from the bulky yarn. I put the face and the eyes in after the doll was stuffed and sewn closed, view video here. Have any questions or if you come across a mistake in the pattern please leave a message in the comment section below.

Grey and Blue Totoros to ride Cat Bus
I couldn't decide if I liked the whiskers
so I ended up removing them

* start stuffing. Shape as you stuff. This little guy needs lots of help to be shaped so take your time and it helps to look at a picture of the actual character. Push the stuffing towards the sides of the head, stretching out and shaping the head as you stuff. The belly and bottom of the body will be stuffed more after two more rows

16) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog, repeat (12)
17) 1sc then 2tog, repeat (8)
