Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Comfort yarn
3.75mm to a 4.5mm hook - use the smaller hook if you see gaps in your stitches
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
100% polyester stuffing
you can use buttons, a french knot or paint eyes on.
For the bunnies pictured I used 10mm safety eyes that I glued in place and buttons.
optional - pipe cleaners for the ears and arms

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
ch1 = chain one
sl st = slip stitch
2tog = crochet 2 stitches together
f/o = finish off

Magic ring:
Many parts of this amigurumi begin with a magic ring. I have 2 short video tutorials that will show you 2 different methods of making a magic ring. Use the one that iseasiest for you. View 1st method here and 2nd method here.

How to read the rows:
Add a maker at the end of row 2 and move that marker each time you finish a row. Each row has a sequence. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that row. When you land on the marker you should be putting in 2sc. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

Safety Eye Placement:
The head and body are worked in one piece. If you plan to use safety eyes they are placed in between the 12th and 13th row with 7 visible stitches between them.

Muzzle Placement:
The top of the muzzle is placed on the 12th or 13th row, whichever looks best to you. Whip stitch a nose in place before sewing the muzzle to the head.

Click here for video tutorial. The video follows the same order as the written pattern.

Pom Pom Tail:
to make a pom pom tail click here

Assembly: Refer to this part of the video for assembly.

1) Sew the legs flat to the underside of the body.
2) The arms are sewn under the head, I sewed mine one ring down from the top of the neck. Add a stitch or 2 from under the arm to the body to tack the arm down if they are flaring out too far.
3) Whip stitch a nose in place before sewing the muzzle to the head. Stuff the muzzle and use lots of pins to hold it in place before sewing. The top of the muzzle is placed on the 13th row.
4) Sit the bunny down and see where the tail will look best then pin it on, use lots of pins then sew it in place unless you made a pom pom tail. Sew the pom pom on as is shown in the video.
5) Pin the ears on top of the head and play around with placement before sewing them in place.

  4. I am having some problems attaching the legs. The body doesn't seem large enough for them. There isn't enough room. Anyway, I'm thinking I need to redo the legs so they are narrower, maybe 12 stitches around instead of 14. No matter how I try I cannot get them to fit side by side (even with some overlap), without them hanging over the sides. I hope that makes sense.

I used a 4.0 mm hook and worsted weight acrylic yarn but I'm thinking I crocheted the body too tightly. My stitches look tighter than yours. And therefore the body is too narrow to accommodate the legs side by side.

    Any thoughts?

    1. I wonder if you under stuffed the body? If you brought the legs down to 12st that really won't make much of a difference. I do show how to stuff the body in the video. Try undoing the finishing knot on the body and stuffing it some more. I hope that helps and keep me posted.

      Delete
    2. I may have under stuffed the body. The head is firmer than the body for sure. But no matter. I tried to see if I could undo the body and stuff it more but it was proving to be too challenging. I was afraid I'd mess it up altogether. Redoing legs is one thing but redoing the head and body is another! LOL

I ripped out the legs back to row 11, further decreased to 12 st. for row 12 and continued with the pattern. This time I was able to attach both legs easily. So I salvaged the bunny and she is quite happy about it. She didn't look forward to more intensive surgery and neither did I.

Thank you so much for your lovely patterns! I appreciate you.

  5. Hi :-)
I just now make a bunny and I see 2 mistakes in legs pattern -
    in 9 row it should be: (1sc then 2tog x 6) 1sc in next 11st (18)
    and in 11 row it should be: (1sc then 2tog x 4) 1sc in next 9st (14)

My English isn't good but I wish that I help :-)

Thanks for your work and yours patterns!!

    1. thank you but the leg pattern is correct as I wrote it.

      when you start row 9 you have 24st already so (1sc then 2tog repeated 6times uses 18st ) and that leaves 6st in the row. 24 -18 = 6

If you did it your way (1sc then 2tog repeated 6times uses 18st) and then add 11st you see it doesn't work because 24 -18=6 and not 24 -18=11

I hope that helps you understand.

Thank you and I'm glad you are enjoying the pattern :)

    2. Maybe krysia assuming the 2tog is repeated 6 time that why krysia was left with 11 st.. it suppose to do 1sc and 2tog 6time right? Then 1sc in next 6st..

  10. Hi Sharon, thank you so much for making these free patterns! They are so lovely! I just made the bunny, and although I wish I had safety eyes as these would look better I'm still really pleased with how he turned out. So cute! I've made him for a baby's first Easter. I was also going to make the the little dungarees for the bunny, but then I decided to make him a little uniform instead so that he's an Anzac Bunny, as baby's daddy is in the Australian Army. I'm so pleased with it I'm not sure I'll be able to part with him - haha!

  11. Good morning!
I am making the bunny for the first time. I'm not sure if I am doing it right, but I thought I was use a 3.75mm hook because I couldn't find my 4mm hook, and I noticed that when I stuffed the bunny, I could see the stuffing through the holes especially in the body area of the bunny and in the feet. Am I doing something wrong? Your pictures look so fabulous, and to me it looks like you can't see the stuffing through the holes at all. Thank you!!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I noticed the same, specifically where you have to crochet two stitches together on the neck area. I'm also using a 3.75mm hook and I'm not sure I could get those stitches any tighter!

      Delete
    2. Cindy are you using medium worsted weight yarn? If so, I'm not sure what to suggest other than tighten up your stitches.
And for the feet and neck area you might see gaps in the stitches even with tightening stitches or using a smaller hook. You can eliminate most if not all of this gap by tightening up the stitches. Using the 2tog method while tightening stitches works very well for me. But there is also one other way to decrease called the Invisible Decrease. I do not use this method. I personally don't like it but it's not the method's fault it's mine, lol I tried it once and it felt awkward and I didn't like the look but other people have said that it needs practice and once mastered it's a great method. So I will leave the option to you. You can decrease the way I do and just tighten up those stitches or try the inv dec. I do not have my own tutorial for the inv dec but you can search the inv dec on youtube or try this tutorial by June Gilbank. I hope that helps!

    3. Thank you for the advice!! I am working on another bunny right now, so I will definitely try tightening up my stitches more. I am using the medium worsted weight yarn, so hopefully tightening will work. I just LOVE all of your videos and patterns!!

    1. it could be your yarn and hook size. This pattern calls for Red Heart Comfort yarn in white and whatever the hook size I used, I can't remember off hand but scroll up and look in the supplies list. It's all there.

A white yarn from a different brand will give you a different gauge even if they are the same weight.

      I hope that helps!
And just in case, make sure you are on the right pattern. There's been some that write me saying their bunny is smaller but they were using my Little Bigfoot Bunny pattern not realizing they are 2 different patterns.

  20. I happened across your videos about three days ago, while looking for a crochet tutorial on something else and I fell in LOVE with the animals! I'd always wanted to try amigurumi, but it seems way too difficult, but after watching a few minutes of your bear tutorial, I gave it a whirl and loved it!

I've already made one of your teddy bears and one of these bunnies (complete with dress, shoes, and a little bow for her ear) and I'm already half way through with my second bunny. These are too stinking cute and your tutorials are fantastic! Thank you so much!

  21. Thank you so very much for your patterns! My mom tried to teach me to crochet when I was around 9 or 10 and it wouldn't stick. I retaught myself not too long ago and have found myself wanting more and more challenges and variety. I love making little blankets and baby dresses. I have looked at all the little stuffies and envied them all but it wasn't until your bunny did I decide to actually try it. I can't work with those tiny crochet hooks and crochet thread, it's just too hard for me to work with. But working with medium weight yarn and regular hooks, I am greatly enjoying the process. My body is coming out a lot smaller than the head, but I've read the comments saying stuff it more, so I'm going to go home this afternoon and stuff the heck-a-doodles out of it and see if that helps. Thank you so much for offering such beautiful and easy to understand patterns. Your blog has become my new favorite website! I will be making all kinds of little critters in the near future! Adorable stuff!

  28. Hi Sharon...I recently re-started crocheting after ignoring it for approx 35 years. I was looking on Pinterest a few weeks ago and came across your Dress Me Bunny pattern, which I thought was adorable. I knew it would be perfect for my one year old grandniece. I had never even heard of the term amigurumi before, but decided to give it a go and purchased safety eyes and some fiberfill. I started to crochet it while watching your YouTube video tutorial.

You truly are a talent. Your pattern and tutorial were very easy to follow and your voice is very soothing to me. All of the tips and little tricks that you provide are the icing on the cake. Last night I finished the bunny except for sewing on the pom-pom tail. I don't have any of the fabric glue you suggested for securing it, but Amazon will have it to me within 2 days. I am going to start on the Bunny's Spring Time Dress and shoes next, followed by the Pig.

I am the type of person who doesn't leave comments (good or bad) online, but I've made an exception tonight because I feel that what you provide to the crocheting community (and to the people in their lives via their finished products) is truly exceptional. Please accept my small donation in appreciation for your hard work.

    Sincerely...Carole from California

The only problem is, I don't know how much I will need! If you would please let me know approximately how many ounces, yards, or grams I would need in yarn that would be a big help! Thanks again. =)

    1. I use jumbo rolls, the Red Heart Comfort yarn as listed in the supplies list and I don't measure out unless I think it would take more than a regular sized package people would buy. This bunny would take about the same amount that's in1 package of Red Heart Super Saver, so you have to do a google search and see the amount are for those packages or go to RedHeart.com and look there for those packages I've mentioned

  34. Ok, thank you! Wasn't sure if it used a whole package or not. =)

  36. Hi Sharon!! I love your patterns!! I wanted to know how to close up the back of the dress and the overalls if I were to make a boy and girl doll instead of bunnies. If this is possible. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. yes, the overalls would just need a few stitches to close the back and maybe add a snap closure just like I add on the dress, but it might not be needed. If it's a doll the overalls should slip on and off just fine with the back stitched closed.
The dress will just need the closures as shown in the pattern but you won't have to worry about putting the closures around the tail.
You could even sew on 4 closures instead of 3 since there'll be no tail sticking out, but make that decision once you have the doll made and you can wrap the dress around her and see if you need that many closures.
      Hope that helped :)

    1. you're welcome and thank you for the kind feedback, that means a lot :)

Yes, just don't close up the legs, leave them open and stuff to the top. Sew them by whip stitching all around the open edge to the bottom of the body.

      Hope that helped

  39. Hey!

I just meant to tell that I gave away plenty of bunnies and bears for Christmas and everyone was soooo excited and impressed, especially by the Dress Me Bunnies.
I don't have a facebook account, so I hope it's okay to post links to pictures here, because I'd love to show what I did.

I took the pattern for the elephant's head and made it larger because I thought a face with cheeks would be perfect for a bunny girl. Here's the result:

    http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x378/cassiopeia1610/Diverses/bunny1_zps0qk5rksf.jpg

In another experiment I combined the elephant's head with the Little Teddy's body and the Little Bigfoot Bunny's ears and got this cute little guy:

    http://i1178.photobucket.com/albums/x378/cassiopeia1610/Diverses/bunny2_zpswdaldjxo.jpg

I'm donating hats and stuffed animals to an organization called beanies for buddies where you make a hat for a child and a hat for a stuffed animal to be given two children receiving chemo. I would like to make a beanie for the bunnies and bears, but I have not been able to figure out a pattern that would allow their ears to poke through. If you can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

  53. Love the pattern! I've made big bunnies and little bunnies of all colors. I used crochet thread to make the little ones. My grand daughters love them. Im not great at sewing the body parts evenly so I decided to crochet all the parts on as I crocheted the main body. It worked out great. Of course the ears hang down but they look cute that way too. Thanks for the cute pattern! Love your videos too!

  54. I ran across your site quite by accident. I had never made an amigurumi before but thought I would try with the Bunny, mainly because you had a tutorial. Your tutorial was fantastic. I loved the step-by-step video. And your instructions were so easy to follow. I made two bunnies for my granddaughters and bear for my grandson, however, I wish the bear was bigger and I couldn't find any instructions for a vest or clothes, so I added a ribbon around his neck to dress him up.

I wouldn't put any wire or pipe cleaner in if it's for a baby/small child. It's always better to be safe than sorry. The ears stand up somewhat on their own w/o it anyway and will look just fine :)

  79. Hello Sharon,
I took your dress me up bunny and turned it into a kitty for my grandsons cousin in France. He's 14 months. My daughter Face Timed the other day and I showed the kitty to my grandson. He was completely intrigued by it and my daughter wants me to make one for him. However I would like to make it double size. I'm not good at altering patterns unless it is simple. So my question is do I just double all the stitches? And do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks for all your generous patterns you make available to everyone.

When I first learned to crochet, patterns written like that would tire me out. I couldn't even start because reading the first few lines made me feel overwhelmed.

I would hate for anyone to feel that way reading mine so I have kept them as simple to read as possible. It's better that the beginner find easy to read patterns and start a new hobby than read a complicated one and never even try.

You comment means so much, thank you.
      Happy crocheting!!

  87. I'm nearly finished with this bunny - so cute, thank you! Maybe two-thirds of the way down the body, I changed color to give her cute undies.

just a couple thoughts on the pattern is to suggest within the pattern to place the safety eyes right after the head is crocheted. I totally forgot until after I was finished the body then decided to unravel a bit to place the eyes but then also to change color for the undies. also, the bit in the leg pattern that seems to have confused some people (me also, until I counted out the stitches): (1sc then 2tog x 6) 1sc in next 6st (18)

I wonder if changing the location of the parenthesis would help: (1sc then 2tog) x 6 1sc in next 6st (18)

Anyway, thanks so much!! My niece will LOVE it!! :)
