How to read the rows: Each row has a sequence as given below. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that particular row. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.
It's a good idea to add in a marker at the end of row 2 and move that marker at the end of every row.

This Coraline Pattern has been translated to Russian! See here

st = stitch
sc = single crochet
2tog = 2 stitches together
ch1 = chain one
sl st = slip stitch
f/o = finish off
BLO = back loops only
FLO = front loops only

HEAD:
1) Create a magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc, 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st, 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in next 3st, 2sc in next st (30)
6) 1sc in next 4st, 2sc in next st (36)
7) 1sc in the BLO (36)
8-17) 1sc in each st for 10 rows (36)
18) 1sc in the next 2st then 2tog for 1 row
19+)1sc then 2tog until you are left with 8st
Before the hole gets too small stuff and shape head

NECK:
1-3) 1 sc in each st for 3 rows (8)
4) 2sc in each st (16)
switch to yellow yarn on the last stitch

BODY:
1) 1sc in the next 7st, 2sc in the 8th st. Do this 2 times (18)
2) 1sc in each st (18)
3) 2sc in the 1st st, 1sc in the rest (19)
4-11) 1sc in each st for 8 rows (19)
12) 1sc in each of the next 18 st, 2sc in the last st (20)
13) 1sc in each of the next 19 st, 2sc in the last st (21)
14) 1sc in each of the next 20 st, 2sc in the last st (22)
15-16) 1sc in the FLO for 2 rows. Finish off

Stuff the neck and the upper part of the body firmly, shape as you stuff. Add a pipe cleaner for neck stability

By crocheting in the front loops for the last 2 rows you created a couple edges on the inside as pictured below. This is where you insert the color you will use for the pants. Use the edge that is furthest from you when you look inside

1) Insert and 1sc around for 1 row
2+)In the BLO, crochet 2tog until you close the gap. Should look as pictured below

Now take the bottom edge of the coat and roll it down to expose the area where you will add the legs as pictured below

LEGS:
1) pick up 6 st in a circle (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc in each (12)
4) 2tog, 1sc in the next 4st, 2tog, 1sc in the last 4st (10)
5) 1sc in each (10)
6) 2tog, 1sc in the next 3st, 2tog, 1sc in the last 3st (8)
7-9) 1sc in each for 3 rows (8)
(switch to yellow on the last stitch)

TOP OF BOOTS:
1) 2sc in the 1st stitch, 1sc in the next 3st, 2sc in the next st, 1sc in the last 3st (10)
2-4) 1sc in each for 3 rows. Finish off

BOTTOM PART OF BOOTS:
1) magic circle (4)
2) 2sc in each st (8)
3-5) 1sc in each st for 3 rows (8)
6) CH1 and turn, 1sc in the next 4st, CH1 and turn, 2tog twice. Finish off.
DO NOT STUFF. Sew to boot as pictured below

Optional: Once you have the boot sewn together, shape the hollow part with your fingers until you are happy with the shape and put in a stitch or 2 to hold that shape together.

Top rim of boot:
Chain a length that will fit around the top of the boot. 1sc in each, finish off and sew to boot.

ARMS:
1) Magic circle 4 (4)
2) 2sc in each (8)
3-5) 1sc in each st for 3 rows (8)
6) 2tog, 1sc in the next 2st, 2tog, 1sc in the last 2st (6)
7-13) 1sc in each st for 7 rows (6)
Do Not Stuff the Arms
switch to skin color on the last st.

HANDS: Now you can either make fingers as I did or make a fingerless hand as pictured. Here is my tutorial on how to crochet doll fingers on youtube if interested ~> how to crochet fingers & a thumb

1) 1sc then 2sc (9)
2) 1sc then 2sc (13)
3+) this is where you go on and make fingers. Might be easier to switch to a smaller hook and make the fingers. Any length you choose.

If not: 1sc then 2tog until you close the gap. Add a thumb if you want to!

To attach the arms thread yard through the inside part of the upper arm as pictured below then continue that thread though the body and on through the inside of the other arm pull it tight and knot off, doing them this way gives you jointed arms!

Yahooo!! You're almost finished, now for the fun part... my favorite part of making dolls. Adding hair and creating a face that gives the doll it's personality!

Now I like to root the hair into my dolls. Coraline has a part to the side of her head so to make this style look it's best I rooted most of it and then lay the rest over the head and sewed it in place as pictured below.

pictured here is another Coraline doll with same hair style

Roll some yarn loosely around your hand then snip through the middle as pictured

Once you have all the yarn you want on the head and you've styled it the way you want it and sewed some of it down there will still be some areas that you'll find as pictured.

I take a chunk as pictured above and run a bead of hot glue along the head and gently drop the hair in place and smooth over it with my hand. I do this around the back too. I like the way the hair stays put when I do it this way. But if you are not good with the glue gun then this is something you shouldn't do but rather just sew it in place

Ok, so for the eyes and mouth, nose and so on, it is all up to the creator. I chose buttons because they look great I think! I glued these in place also. The nose is created by inserting a length of yarn through the back of the head and out through where the nose will be. Use a needle and crochet hook to build and shape the nose. Once you've finished run the tail of the yarn back out through the back of the head and knot off. Hide in the hair. The same goes for the eyebrows and the mouth.

The dragonfly hair clip I made with pipe cleaners and glued in place.

Oh, almost forgot... the button key necklace I made simply by taking a key charm and gluing a button on it! SO cute!!

I hope you  enjoyed this pattern!

  7. What an awesome Coraline doll! My three-year-old was obsessed with Coraline last year and I couldn't find any kind of pattern anywhere on how to crochet her a Coraline doll, so I had to make one out of felt and cloth. It turned out great, but I would have much rather crocheted her one. Your pattern is amazing. I might have to crochet her this one now, too, right along with Wuss Puss. Thanks for sharing! :)

  8. Thank you so much Larna! I do appreciate the kind words. My kids LUV the Coraline movie and that was my motivation to make the dolls too. They are fun dolls to have :)

  11. I love the doll! I love the hands, face, everything about it. I have to say your technique for the hair interests me greatly. I make dolls and I have yet to make one with a "head of hair" like your Coraline doll. The way you did it looks simple enough. I'm planning to make an Alice in Wonderland doll. I'm wondering, do you think the rooting technique would work best for her as well? I'm also wondering, how many rows did you do? I can see from the picture the one row before you sew on the top part of her hair, but what about under that row?
    If you could answer any of these questions it would be greatly appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hello Devious One! I usually do 3 or 4 rows and skip a row in between.

    I think this technique would be perfect for Alice, the only thing is because the top cap isn't rooted you'd really have to sew it in place quite well to ensure none slips out. You could also run a hot bead of glue down each side of the part on the very top and that would hold it securely too.

    Thanks for the message and if there's anything else please don't hesitate to write again :)

    Sharon

    ReplyDelete
  13. PS Devious One... I meant a hot bead of glue "on the under-side" of the yarn hair of each side of the part on top :)

  14. Thank you for getting back to me! I just may try that! :)

    Happy Thanksgiving!

    Although Coraline is a female and a "doll" I am currently working on her for my boy. He will be so excited to pull her out of a box this Christmas. I may try to make a "Xander Button Eyed Doll" to package with her :) (building off your design). I think that would make it extra special for him :) only trouble is the whole procedure is covert due to school schedule and impending winter break! Lol
    Thank you so very much for sharing this amazing creation of yours and giving me a way to improve his Christmas this year :) I'm sure requests will be made for Wybie and Wuss Puss after he opens this gift!

  28. I absolutely adore your Coraline! At times, it's a toss up between Coraline and The Other Mother when it comes to my favorite character from the book. I haven't seen the movie.

    I'm currently working on a Coraline of my own. Ok... a Coraline for my daughter. I wanted to modify my a bit, but since the first one is my daughter, the only thing I've changed is the hair color, and the outfit. It's gold. Besides those two things, my daughter wanted her Coraline to be "just like yours!"

      I never heard of Coraline until I watched the movie, and of course I became a huge fan. I have the audio book now and I am looking for a good illustrated copy of the book but so far no luck. I'm not sure there are any.

      I'm so happy to hear your daughter will soon have her own Coraline doll. She is lucky to have a mom like you :)

      I look forward to seeing your doll once she fully emerges into the world!

    1. roll the bottom of the coat up and place the end of the leg on the body. It might be helpful to place the 2nd leg too and pin them in place to get a good idea how they will look and how much space you need to sew both legs on. Once you have an idea where one leg will go just sew in right onto the body using a length of yarn the same color as the legs and a yarn needle. Sew the top edge of the leg to the body... I hope that helps. Planet June has a little photo tutorial on sewing amis together. You might want to take a look. Just highlight copy and paste into your address bar http://www.planetjune.com/blog/joining-amigurumi/
