Supplies:
worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Comfort yarn. I didn't measure out exact amounts used but you'll use less than 364 yrds
same hook size you used to make your puppy or go up a size. I used a 4.5mm hook to make the overalls pictured and a 4.25mm hook to make the puppy. I crochet fairly on the tight side and the overalls fit perfectly. If you crochet on the loose side than use the same hook you made your puppy with.
2 buttons if giving puppy to small child or baby, leave off buttons due to choking hazard
regular sewing thread and needle or hot glue to attach buttons
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
FLO = Front Loops Only
BLO = Back Loops Only
skip ch = skip chain
f/o = finish off

How to read the rows:

Each row has a sequence as given below. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that particular row, unless otherwise instructed. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

Front Panel:
1) ch 15
2) starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in each ch (14) ch 2 and turn
3-8) skip ch, 1hdc in each st for 6 rows ch 2 and turn at the end of every row, skip ch at the start of every row. Ch1 and turn at the end of row 8 (14)
9) skip ch, 1sc in each st (14)
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Weave in the shorter yarn tail to hide it.

Straps make 2:
1) ch 40 make a long starting yarn tail that you can use to sew one end to the front panel.
2) starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in each ch (39) ch1 and turn
3) skip ch, 1sc in each st (39)
f/o leaving a tail for sewing.

Assemble the panel and straps.
You can do them how you prefer, I sewed the 2 front side ends on the outside of the panel as pictured. The straps are extra long so don't worry about sewing too much in the front. I overlapped mine about 1/2 inch or so Once the shorts are made then you can sew on the other ends.
Set panel aside for now.

Shorts:
1) ch 66  begin with a long starting yarn tail, you will use this to sew the corners together later.
2) starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in each ch (65) ch 2 and turn
3-7) skip ch, 1hdc in each st for 5 rows *ch2 and turn at the end of each row and skip ch at the start of each row.
8) skip ch, 1hdc in next 11st then 2hdctog (60)
9) Connect ends with 1sc. Add a marker in this stitch, this will be the last stitch of the row. 1sc in each st around (60)

10) do not ch, 1hdc in each st for 1 row
11) 1sc in each st for 1 row
12) ch10 and sl st into the 30th st from the front of the ch. Mark this stitch, this will be the last stitch of the row. Continue to move marker each time you end a row.

13) now working in the round to your left. 1sc in each st for 1 row. When you get to the chain, work in the outer loops (40)

14) 1hdc in next 7st then 2hdc in next st (45)
15-17) 1hdc in each st for 3 rows
18) 1sc in each st for 1 row
if your last stitch lands in the front of the pants then continue on for a few stitches with single crochets to the inside of the pant leg. That way you will not see where the legs were f/o. sl st next st and f/o weave in yarn tail.

Flip the piece right side out before starting the 2nd pant leg. Sew the corners together in the back, this makes the hole for the puppy tail. Weave in yarn tail to hide it.

2nd pant leg: With with the front of the pants towards you
1) insert yarn into the corner, ch1 (this ch counts as one stitch) then put 1sc in the rest of the row (40) You will be working in the outer loops of the divide for the first part. When you insert the yarn it will look like a big jump between the row your hook is in and the next row, don't worry about it, that jump disappears once you start the next row. See first and second photo below
2) 1sc in each st for 1 row (40)
3) 1hdc in next 7st then 2hdc in next st (45)
4-6) 1hdc in each st for 3 rows
7) 1sc in each st for 1 row
remember ~ if your last stitch lands in the front of the pants then sc to the inside of the pant leg so you will not see where the legs were f/o. sl st next st and f/o weave in yarn tail.

And you're done. I hope you enjoyed this pattern. If you'd like to show off your puppy and overalls you can post pictures on my facebook page, Amigurumi Freely, I'd love to see!

  8. If you do not add the overall top, this pattern becomes shorts. If you take this pattern and then do not join the bottom together to make the shorts, it can be a skirt!
