Nugget the Lil' Owl Crochet Mini Owl

Nugget the Lil' Owl,
This owl is part of the Lil' Trouble Teddy series.
There's nothing spectacular about this owl, it's really basic but cute. I designed the owl for it to sit on top of Lil' Oak the Hiding Tree. Nugget is a whole 2 inches tall!

There's Lots More!

I designed more patterns for this Lil' Trouble series.
See the round up here

The Lil' Trouble Teddy and Nugget the Lil' Owl are quick to make. They're a great little project to bring along to a doctor's apt or anywhere you'll be stuck waiting for a bit. They will keep your hands busy and your mind occupied!

How To Print The Pattern:

Use the free service found here.

How to read the rows:
Each row has a sequence as given below. Example: 1hdc then 2hdc in next st means repeat that sequence 1hdc then 2hdc in next st followed by 1hdc then 2hdc in next st over and over to the end of that particular row. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.  Add in a marker at the end of row 2 and move that marker at the end of every row.

Supplies:
Red Heart Comfort yarn in any color
4.25mm
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
polyester stuffing
Use buttons, safety eyes, fabric, paint or felt for the eyes. Just remember anything you add could become a chocking hazard to small children.

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
f/o = finish off

Starting at the bottom of the owl:
1) magic circle with 6hdc (6)
2) 2hdc in each st (12)
3) 1hdc in the next 3st then 2hdc in next st (15)
4) 1hdc in each st for 1 row
5) 1hdc in next 3st then 2hdctog (12)
6) 2dc in next 2st then 1sc in next 4st then 2dc in next 2st then 1sc in next 3st and sl st next st. f/o
leaving a tail to sew up the gap. If you do not add wings, stuff body then sew the top edge closed and hide yarn tail inside owl's body. If you add wings, leave body without stuffing until you add them.

Wings:
Fold owl body flat with the high parts (ears) on the sides. Insert yarn where the top of the wing will be, (in between the 4th and 5th row) ch1 then add 5dc in the same space. f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Stuff the owl before sewing wings in place. Fold the wing forward, with the round part towards the front of the owl. Sew it in place on a bit of an angle. Hide yarn tails inside body

Eyes and Beak:
play around different ideas. If you like how I did mine then:
Cut two pieces of white felt, you can see I cut mine rather large. Add black paint or felt pen for the pupils. Run a thin bead of tacky glue around the edge of the felt and lay a strand of yarn the same color as owl, around the edge, cut to size so the ends meet. Glue eyes to the doll. I didn't want them to be perfect circles so once they were on the doll I squished them together, one of the pupils is a bit higher than the other. This way they are a bit quirky looking. Do as you desire for this part :)
Add a bit of orange or bright yellow yarn for the beak. You could also glue on a small piece of felt or even paint the beak on. Feel free to get creative!

    1. comfort yarn is a 10 ply worsted weight.
      I list what I used so that you can get the same owl as seen.
      Feel free to substitute other yarn and other hook sizes for sure :)
      Hope that helps!

  7. I love Nugget. Could you help me out on something. My ears on my owl do not look anything like your owls. They just barely stick up. Is there a trick or something that could help me? You whip stitch it closed, right? Yours are very prominent and mine are barely noticeable. Help.😱 Lol.

    1. are you doing dc's when the pattern says to? I didn't do anything special to make them stand out, the dc's make that area stand up higher than the rest of the row.
