Crochet Sled For Your Amigurumi

A sled for your amigurumi! Because they need to have fun in the snow too!
I designed 2 different lengths, a long one for double riders and a shorter one for a single rider. You can easily adjust the width or length by adding or taking away rows in the pattern. The mice pattern is now posted here

Next year I hope to revisit this pattern and get a video tutorial filmed for it. Until then I hope those of you who use this written pattern will enjoy it. Happy Crocheting!

Supplies:

Use the same weight yarn for the sled as the yarn you used for your amigurumi.
The sled pictured was made with Red Heart Super Saver in Cherry
I did not measure out how much yarn I used. For the sled you need less than 1 package of Red Heart Super Saver.
4mm hook feel free to use another hook size
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
plastic mesh sheet any type as long as you can bend it
20 gauge wire you can use a lighter gauge wire
masking tape

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
ch1 = chain
hdc = half double crochet
BLO = back loops only
f/o = finish off

Long and Short Sled:
TIP: When working in rows of hdc it is easy to miss the last st of the row so if your ends start looking a little wonky it's because you're not working the last st. The last st of hdc rows will always be slightly pulled down so you will have to look for it and make sure your hook is going through both loops of the st.
1) for the longer sled chain 41, for the shorter sled chain 31
2) starting with the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in each ch (you will have 40st or 30st when you're done this row) Ch2 and turn at the end of this row
3-9) 1hdc in each st for 7 rows *ch2 and turn at the end of each row, begin in the 3rd st from the hook after you ch2 and turn.
10) ch1 and turn, start in the 2nd st from the hook, 1sc in the BLO for 1 row *chain 2 and turn at the end of this row
11-17) 1hdc in each st for 7 rows *ch2 and turn just as you did for the previous rows of hdc
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing.

The assembly is the exact same for both the longer and shorter sled:

Fold the crochet piece in half, it should fold easily where you worked in the BLO for row 10. Cut a piece of the plastic mesh that will fit inside the crocheted piece. Now prepare the front of the plastic that will be the bend in the front of the sled.

Cut 2 lengths of wire about 12 inches each (in the photos you might notice my wire is looped more times than instructed here, I had cut it too long so don't worry if your wire doesn't loop around as many times as shown in the photo). Loop a wire through a square in the top corner of the mesh sheet then loop the loose ends through a square about 3 inches down, then back up and squeeze the wire with pliers to make sure it's laying flat. Tape up the ends so there's no risk of the ends poking through. Test the piece before sewing. See if it holds the shape when you roll the front end, if it doesn't hold in place on its own then that means you used a lighter gauge wire so just add more wire and repeat the step of wrapping and taping.

Now you can sew this whole piece inside the crochet part. Whip stitch all the way around. Go through the squares when you can to ensure the crochet piece doesn't bunch up. Knot off when done and hide yarn tails inside. Roll the front of the sled, I used a small bottle to roll the front of the sled with and that helped give me an even roll.
For the rope use a lighter color yarn, chain of 40 and f/o. Sew each side to the front of the sled.

And now you're done. I hope you enjoyed the pattern!
Donations of any size are greatly appreciated and help keep the patterns free.
