Froggy With Egg and Without

I present to you the Frog!
Froggy is special because his body is hollow and can be opened and closed which means he can eat flies! Oh yes, there is a pattern for the flies too and you can pick that up  here.

Without the egg!
If you don't have any left over plastic Easter eggs, have no fear because I also wrote up the pattern for the same frog that has no egg inside. You can find both patterns below, please read through all the instructions and information I've provided first, this will help you along as smoothly as possible. I will have a video tutorial asap (I can't give a date) just check back for pattern updates

Supplies:
Green Frog - Red Heart Comfort yarn color Emerald 3233
Pink Frog - Red Heart Comfort yarn color Light Pink 3133
4.0 mm hook *use a smaller hook if you crochet fairly loose
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
100% polyester stuffing
2 buttons, felt, paint, French Knot or whatever you choose for eyes. I chose felt and glued those on but later found they kept falling off so it would be best to sew the felt pieces to the eye with regular sewing thread.
1 plastic Easter egg similar in color to the yarn used to make the body (C = 9" or see size pictured below)
no egg needed if you make a solid body
emery board or sand paper
fabric fusion or tacky glue
10 pipe cleaners similar in color to the yarn you use

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
2tog = crochet 2 stitches together
hdc = half double crochet
f/o = finish off

Magic ring:
Many parts of this amigurumi begin with a magic ring. I have 2 short video tutorials that will show you 2 different methods of making a magic ring. Use the one that is
easiest for you. View 1st method here and 2nd method here.

How to read the rows:
Add a maker at the end of row 2 and move that marker each time you finish a row. Each row has a sequence. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that row. When you land on the marker you should be putting in 2sc. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

IMPORTANT
- Make all the frog parts first. The eyes and limbs need to be sewn on before the egg is glued in place. Using the emery board or sand paper rough up the entire egg, making sure you rough up all around the edges.

Frog Eyelids with green make 2:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4-7) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
sl st next st and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing

Frog Eyes with white make 2:
1) magic circle with 6sc(6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4-5) 1sc in each st for 2 rows - if you plan on sewing felt for pupils, do that now and do not pull the thread so tight you alter the shape of the felt, lightly stitch around the felt piece.
6) 1sc then 2tog (12)
7) 1sc in each st for 1 row
f/o leave a bit of a tail for closing up the gap. Using a yarn needle weave in and out of the remaining stitches but do not pull yet, add safety eyes, buttons, or beads. Put them very close to or on row 1. Stuff the eye then pull the yarn tail tight to close the hole. Knot off and hide yarn tail inside eye. See assembly instructions below for sewing eyes to the body

Frog Arms with green make 2:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 1sc then 2sc in next st (9)
3-16) 1sc in each st for 14 rows
17) 1sc then 2tog (6)
18) 1sc in each st for 1 row
19) 2sc in each st for 1 row (12)
20) 1sc in next 3st then 2sc in next st (15)
21-22) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
fold 2 pipe cleaners in half making a loop on one end that will fit into the hand. Twist and bend over the free ends so that no sharp points can stick through the arm. Fit the pipe cleaners into place, no need to add any stuffing.
23) fold the edges of the hand flat, line up the stitches best you can because you will crochet through both sides at the same time for this row. ch1, 3hdc in first st, sl st next 2st, ch1, 3hdc in next st, sl st next 2st, ch1, 3hdc next st. This completes the hand now sl st in a space close to your last hdc and f/o leave a long tail for sewing. Using a yarn needle, bring the yarn tail up through the arm and out the end of the arm. Knot off at the end. You will use this yarn tail to sew the arm to the body. See assembly instructions below pattern.

Frog Legs with green make 2:

1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 1sc then 2sc in next st (9)
3-11) 1sc in each st for 9 rows
12) 1sc then 2tog (6)
13) 1hdc in each st for 1 row (6)
14) 1sc then 2sc in next st (9)
15-20) 1sc in each st for 6 rows
21) 1sc then 2tog (6)
22) 1sc in each st for 1 row
23) 2sc in each st for 1 row (12)
24) 1sc in next 3st then 2sc in next st (15)
25) 1sc in next 4st then 2sc in next st (18)
26-27) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
fold 2 pipe cleaners in half making a loop on one end that will fit into the foot. Twist and bend over the free ends so that no sharp points can stick through the leg. This was the same thing you did for the arm but this piece you just made will not fit the length of the leg so take one more pipe cleaner, bend and twist it around the first piece adding to the length. Fit the pipe cleaners into place, no need to add any stuffing.
28) fold the edges of the foot flat, line up the stitches best you can just as you did for the hands as you will crochet through both sides at the same time for this row. ch1, 2hdc in the first st then 1hdc in the next, sl st next 2st, ch1, 3hdc in next st, sl st next 2st, ch1, 1hdc next st then 2hdc in last st. This completes the foot now sl st in a space close to your last hdc and f/o leave a long tail for sewing. Using a yarn needle, bring the yarn tail up through the leg and out the end of the leg. Knot off at the end and use this yarn tail to sew the leg to the body. I did not add photos to this section because it's almost the same as you did for the hands. If you can do the hands then the feet should not be a problem. See assembly instructions below.

Top half of body with green:

1) magic circle with 6sc 6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in each st for 1 row
6) 1sc in next 5st then 2sc in next st (28)
7) 1sc in next 6st then 2sc in next st (32)
8-11) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
f/o and weave in yarn tail. Do not glue egg inside body until you have completed assembly instructions below.

Bottom half of body with green:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in next 3st then 2sc in next st (30)
6) 1sc in next 14st then 2sc in next st (32)
7-11) 1sc in each st for 5 rows
f.o and weave in yarn tail

Frog Body Without Egg:
Please note the legs are finicky to sew in place. I tried sewing them on before I stuffed the body and I did not like how they sat or looked so I had to take them out and sew them on after the body was stuffed and closed. The same for the arms. The only part that worked well for sewing before stuffing was the eyes.

1) magic circle  with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in next 5st then 2sc in next st (28)
6-7) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
8) 1sc in next 6st then 2sc in next st (32)
9-10) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
11) 1sc in next 7st then 2sc in next st (36)
sew the eyes in place now. Assembly and sewing are same as the frog with egg. You can also put in a mouth.
12-15) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
16) 1sc in next 7st then 2tog (32)
17) 1sc in next 6st then 2tog (28)
18) 1sc in next 5st then 2tog (24)
19) 1sc in next 4st then 2tog (20)
20) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (15) *stuff the body
21) 1sc then 2tog (10)
f/o and weave in and out of the remaining stitches. Before pulling the yarn tail to close the gap stuff more as needed. Pull tight and knot off. Hide the yarn tail in the body. The arms and legs are sewn in line with the eyes. Pin them in place, play around with the placement until you are happy with how they look. Sew by whip stitches the edges of the limbs to the body just as pictured for the frog with egg.

ASSEMBLY For Frog With Egg:
Click on photos to enlarge them

1) Hold the eyelids together and add a couple stitches to sew them side by side.
Sew the eyeballs inside the eyelids. I just sewed the bottom of the eyeball to the bottom of the eyelid.

2) Sew the eyes to the top half of the body. A few of my sewing stitches went right through the whole eye, going right out the top and down through the eye again. Don't pull any stitches that go through the whole eye too tight or you will cause the eye to become out of shape.

3) Add in a mouth. I just used a length of red yarn and put the corners in between the 7th and 8th row and added a holding stitch in between the 8th and 9th row. Knot it off inside the body and cut the yarn tails up shorter, closer to the knot.

4) Sew the arms onto the body. They should be in line with the eyes. The top of the arm is just above the 5th row. Whip stitch down one side of the arm then the other.

5) Sew the legs on. The top of the leg is on the 5th row. I whip stitched one side then the other, whip stitching from the top of the leg which is on row 5 to about row 8. I had forgotten to take photos of the legs sewn in before I glued the egg in so please be sure you sew the legs on before you do the next step.

6) Glue the top half of egg in. Do not have any glue puddles or the glue will seep through the yarn and be visible. Instead spread the glue around evenly, making sure to also get the glue right around the edge but not over the edge. The top half should go all the way inside the body. You might have to stretch the body a bit to ensure that the bottom edge is completely in line with the top edge of the egg.

7) Glue the bottom half of the egg in. The bottom half of the egg has a ridge, make sure this ridge is completely visible as pictured below and the crochet edge is below that ridge line or the egg will not close properly. Test the egg first to see how it opens and closes.
Leave the egg halves apart and check on them after 10 minutes to see if the all the edges are still as they should be and haven't drifted up or down. Let the glue completely dry before putting the halves together.

8) Enjoy your frog!

Remember there are flies that fit in the frog's tummy  here
