Browning the Bear With Egg and Without

Meet Browning the Bear.
Browning is a special bear because he can hold treasures inside his body! His body is hollow and can be opened and closed. I first introduced him (the one furthest right) just before Easter this year 2015. I made him along with a monkey named Rosey. If you missed that post see it here, there's lots of cute pictures to see.

Without the egg!
I also wrote up a pattern for the same bear that has no egg inside and that one is the first one on the left. You can find both patterns below, please read through all the instructions and information I've provided first, this will help you along as smoothly as possible.

Supplies:
Red Heart Comfort yarn in any color
4.0 mm hook *use a smaller hook if you crochet fairly loose
blunt end yarn needle for sewing
scissors
100% polyester stuffing
2 buttons, felt, paint, French Knot or whatever you choose for eyes. The eyes in the bears pictured are 10mm
1 plastic Easter egg similar in color to the yarn used to make the body (C = 5.5" or see size pictured below)
no egg needed if you make a solid body
a small amount of polyester stuffing
emery board or sand paper
fabric fusion or tacky glue
2 pipe cleaners similar in color to the yarn you use

Abbreviations:
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
sl st = slip stitch
2tog = crochet 2 stitches together
f/o = finish off
IMPORTANT - Make all the bear parts first. The limbs and tail need to be sewn on before the egg is glued in place. Using the emery board or sand paper rough up the entire egg, making sure you rough up all around the edges.

See assembly section below for when and how to sew on parts. I normally sew on muzzles, ears and mouth pieces after a doll has been stuffed and closed. For this bear I sewed on these parts as I was still crocheting the head piece. While some may find that easier I found it to be more difficult to hold pieces on while sewing, I much prefer being able to pin things in place. But I'll leave that part of the assembly up to you as it is a matter of preference. However, the arms, legs and tail do need to be sewn in place BEFORE the egg is glued in.

Magic ring:
Many parts of this amigurumi begin with a magic ring. I have 2 short video tutorials that will show you 2 different methods of making a magic ring. Use the one that is
easiest for you. View 1st method here and 2nd method here.

How to read the rows:
Add a maker at the end of row 2 and move that marker each time you finish a row. Each row has a sequence. Example: 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that row. When you land on the marker you should be putting in 2sc. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

Ears, muzzle, mouth, limbs and tail are for both the bear with egg and without:

Ears: make 2
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in next 3st then 2sc in the next st (15)
4) 1sc in each st for 1 row
5) 1sc in next 3st then 2tog (12)
6) 1sc in each st for 1 row
sl st next st and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Ears can be sewn on anytime before or after you close up the head. I prefer after the arms are sewn on so I can use them as a guide. The ears are in line with the arms.

Muzzle:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9)
4) 1sc in each st for 1 row
sl st next st and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Whip stitch a nose onto the muzzle

Mouth:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) ch 1 and turn, 1sc in each st
f/o leaving a tail for sewing. Glue on a piece of red felt for a tongue after the mouth is sewn to the face.

Arms: make 2
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 1sc then 2sc in next st (9)
3-5) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
6) 2tog twice then 1sc in next 5st (7)
7-13) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Stuff the arms with a folded pipe cleaner. Loop the ends so no sharp points ever poke through. If you don't want to use pipe cleaner then stuff the hand and also lightly stuff the arm. Sew arms to the body before gluing the egg in place (see assembly section below).

Legs: make 2
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in the next st (18)
4-5) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
6) 1sc then 2tog (12)
7) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9)
8-11) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
sl st next st and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing.
Stuff and shape foot, stuff leg. Sew to the bottom half of the body before gluing the egg in place.

Tail:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in the next 2st then 2tog (9)
sl st next st and f/o. Sew to the bottom half of the body before you glue the egg in place. No need to stuff the tail.

Head and Top Half of Body; The Bear With Egg inside:

Starting at the top of the head:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in next 3st then 2sc in next st (30)
6-12) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
add the eyes in between the 8th and 9th row with 4 or 6 visible stitch holes between them. Placement and spacing is a matter of preference.
13) 1sc in next 3st then 2tog (24)
14) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (18)

You can sew the ears the muzzle and mouth into place now or wait until you stuff the head. It's all a matter of preference. I find it a bit more finicky to sew these parts to an empty head but some might find it easier. The top of the muzzle should be on or just below the 9th row (see assembly section below)
15) 1sc then 2tog (12) stuff head, shape as you stuff
16) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9)
17) 2sc in each st (18) stuff the head more if needed
18-22) 1sc in each st for 5 rows. For a slightly lighter weight yarn you might need to add more rows. Place the top half of the egg inside the body when you have finished row 22 and see if the bottom edge of row 22 reaches the edge of the egg and the egg is completely inside the body, you might have to stretch it a bit. If it doesn't reach then add rows as needed.
sl st next st and f/o. Weave in yarn tail.

Bottom of body for bear with the egg:

1) magic circle  with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4-7) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
sl st next st and f/o. Weave in the yarn tail
sew legs and tail on before putting the bottom half of the egg into the body.

Head and Body for the Bear without the egg:

Starting at the top of the head:
1) magic circle  with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5) 1sc in next 3st then 2sc in next st (30)
6-12) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
add the eyes in between the 8th and 9th row with 4 visible stitch holes between them.
The top of the muzzle should be on or just below the 9th row.
15) 1sc then 2tog (12) stuff head, shape as you stuff
16) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9)
17) 2sc in each st (18)
18-20) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
21) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
22-23) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
24) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (18)
25) 1sc then 2tog (12)
stuff the body. Be sure that you have enough stuffing in the head and neck area and there are no holes or gaps in the stuffing
26) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (9) stuff more as needed
27) 2tog twice and f/o leave a bit of a tail for closing up the gap. Using a yarn needle weave in and out of the remaining st, pull tight to close. Knot off and hide yarn tail inside body.

ASSEMBLY For The Bear With The Egg:

top of muzzle is on the 9th row.
Sew the mouth piece just below the muzzle.
Glue in red felt for the tongue after the mouth has been sewn in.
Eyes are in between the 8th and 9th row with 4 visible stitch holes between them.

Rough up the egg. I used an emery board to do this.
Put glue inside the bear, spreading it all around evenly.

Do not have any glue puddles when you push the egg in, this will cause glue to seep through the body.

Do not to put the halves together until the glue is dry or you could end up gluing the halves together

Notice pictured below the bottom half of the egg's edge is above the crochet edge. Look at the egg and how it closes, the bottom half of the egg has a ridge and you want to be sure that ridge is fully exposed to the line. The top half of the egg should be all the way inside the top half of the body with the crochet edge and the egg edge even.

Allow the glue to fully dry before putting the bear together.
Make sure the crochet edges are where they are supposed to be before the glue dries. Check on it after 10 minutes of putting the egg in and make sure the crochet edges haven't moved away from the edges of the egg.

I hope you enjoyed the pattern!
