FAQ

Updated May 2019 ~

1) How can I print off the patterns?

Print a pattern by pasting the pattern url address here. Try it out, it works and it's free!

2) What type of yarn do you use?
Unless I say otherwise I am using Red Heart Super Saver or Red Heart Comfort yarn. It's a worsted weight, acrylic yarn.
View a standard yarn weight chart here

3) Where can I find the safety eyes you use?
I buy mine online from Lisa & Ed Eyes and More.

4) How much yarn do I need?

I do not measure out what I use unless I believe the pattern will use more than a regular sized package with  364 yards. If it is not stated in the supplies list of the pattern how much you need then the pattern in question will take less than 364 yards.

5) How can I make the amigurumi bigger?
There are 2 easy ways to do that.
a) Use a bulky or heavier weight yarn and larger hook
b) Hold 2 regular strands of yarn together and use a larger hook. I have examples here

6) Can I sell finished items?

Yes! You can sell any item you've made from my patterns.

7) Can I translate your pattern?

Yes, you can translate one of my patterns but only if you provide a link back to the original. A link that is visible at the top of your translation and clearly states that you are translating only. To see the perfect example of  an acceptable   translation click here. This kind of translation is one I will provide a link to on my sites.

8) Can I  post a pictures for you to see what I made?

Yes. On my facebook page Amigurumi Freely

9) What is your youtube channel called?

My channel has my name, Sharon Ojala. Subscribe here

10) Why donate?

I'm glad you asked! I answered that here

11) I have a pattern question,
a) Leave questions in the comment section on the pattern page.
b) State what section and row you need help with.

12) I'm Looking for a particular pattern,
a) Use the search bar on the right side, near the top.
b) One word searches work best.

13)  Do you have other blogs?

a) Where The Gnomes Live is my crafty blog.
b) Amigurumi Freely is a free pattern directory.
c)
Amigurumi To Go is the blog you are on now.

  3. Hi there! I wasn't sure where else to post this question.. but do you have a moose pattern, or have you ever thought of designing one? I absolutely LOVE your patterns and how you word them (as well as all of your video tutorials), they're really easy to follow, unlike some of the patterns I've tried before. Thanks so much! :)

    1. Hi there, I don't have an amigurumi moose at the moment but there is one in the future.. just not sure when that will be. I do have somewhat of an ugly one that's part of the Critter Bits that are just meant as yarn busters, they could be used as cat toys. Look to the right of this page, scroll down until you see a label list and click on "Critter Bits"

Thanks so much for the kind compliments, I appreciate that!

    1. Thank you and welcome!

Starting out I would go with any of the Little Bigfoot patterns or the small mouse. Use the label list below on the right side of this blog. I have 2 different mice, a small one and a character one, start with the small one. These all have full video tutorials to go with them. Have fun and keep me posted :)

  5. I made a couple of your patterns, the panda and the pig, and my son wants a dinosaur but I see you don't have a pattern. I wondered if maybe you have been working on one or know of a good free pattern. I browsed through pintrest and couldn't find anything. I love your patterns, they are so easy to read and so fun to make.

  6. Hi there. After needing a mouse pattern, I found yours a few days ago. I have now made three of the cute little creatures.

I name most things I make. Among others, there is Miss Soxy Foxy and Miss Whoo Goes There (an owl). I thought and I thinked (LOL) but couldn't come up with a name for the mouse. Then I saw your profile. The perfect name popped into my head but I really need your permission to use it. I'd love to name the mice I make Miss Oyahlah Mouse, if that's ok with you.

  7. Hello Sharon,

I really love your patterns and tutorials. That is why I wanted to ask you about something. I have a blog with projects that I do where I link back to the original pattern and if I do any editing to make it easier for me when I print it for my giant book of patterns. As I am working on some gifts and would like to use two of your patterns can I link to them in my blog? Any edits I might make to the pattern are small like detailing more(Repeat from *) or just adding a key of terms at the top. I also included pictures of what it looks like as I work.

Thank you for your time and use of your patterns.

  8. Hi there... thank you, I'm glad you have been enjoying the patterns. I wouldn't agree to the writing of the entire pattern on your blog but writing out an edit, for example for row 12 I did such and such is perfectly fine... thanks for asking :)

  9. Hi there! I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your video tutorials and your blog! I found it super easy to follow and very helpful! I especially like making the Bigfoot monkey (especially since the head and body are connected!) and the duck. I'm a college student, so even with the limited colors I can keep in my room, I can still practice making cute animals and I love learning these new patterns. I just had one question about the Bigfoot monkey pattern: I'm still new to trying to figure out stitching numbers and what not, so if I wanted to make it bigger and keep the same design pattern (maybe close to the size of the duck head, but without the cheeks) where would I add an increase or how would the rows differ? I am planning on making a monkey for my young cousin and I just don't want it to get lost. Is it possible to make it bigger? Thank you for having such an awesome blog with great designs!!

I've recently decided that I would like to open an etsy account to help with university and I was wondering if I'm allowed to sell the creations I make from your patterns, I know you've already said it was OK to seek the, but I was wondering how far that goes due to the fact that on etsy I'll be making them when by order. I'm just finishing the cute duck pattern and its so hard! But I'm hanging in there... It's not exactly like yours but I'm doing my best and enjoying the process :)
I wonder what is the size of the eyes you use? 2mm? Are there good replacement for this pattern?

  15. Hello Sharon. I need your advice on how to evaluate my work. If you would not mind to use the amigurumi duck as an example. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hello Sharon. I'm Fanny, swiss girl. (sorry for my english). I try to begin the crochet, and saw many of yours videos (lovely!!). I just have one question. You say you use one type of yarn, but you don't say the yarn size. If you use a 3.75 mm hook (for exemple totoro), the yarn size is very big, no? like 4.5 mm?

because i test it with a 3, 3.5 yarn size (and 2.5 mm hook) and the begining was more smaller that yours.

    Tank you for your time!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I do say the yarn size. It's the very first answer at the top of this page. Red Heart Super Saver or Red Heart Comfort yarn is a worsted weight medium and that's a 10ply yarn. Those are the hooks I normally use, a 3.75 or a 4.0 or a 4.5.

I also use a 5.00 and a 5.5 but those are large hooks. They work for me because I crochet fairly tight. If someone crochets loose stitches then a 5.0 or larger would cause gaps in their stitches.

If yours came out smaller you might be using a lighter weight yarn. Have a look at this chart and see what weight yarn you are using. Yarn Weight Chart

    1. I'd say between an 8mm and a 10mm. It's all a matter of preference really. 8mm are the most common size for amis between 8 and 10 inches tall but some look better with a larger eye. If you want to test first before buying try pinning buttons on or cut pieces of felt in different sizes and see what size looks best to you. Hope that helps :)

  29. Hi Sharon - Thank you for your patterns! Everyone loves the ones I have made.
Forgive me if you have answered this somewhere - I have not seen it. Does using pipe cleaners/chenille stems to make things bendable cause them to not be washable? Do you recommend surface washing to machine washing? I have recommended to put things in a ingerie bag - but wondered if the pipe cleaners cause a rust problem.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Mary, I actually never even thought about that. I think if they dry thoroughly they would not rust. But they should be spot cleaned when possible and if really dirty then washed in a pillow case or lingerie bag on gentle. Hang to dry or dry in a bag. Hope that helps!

  30. Hi, Sharon. Have you ever thought about making a pattern for a kangaroo or other Australian animals? I was looking online for such patterns when I discovered your site. You have some lovely patterns, including a beautiful koala, but I didn't notice other Aussie creatures. We have a wildlife refuge and sanctuary here on Kangaroo Island, Australia, and I'd been thinking of trying to sell crocheted or knitted kangaroos, koalas and perhaps possums and echidnas, to raise funds to finance urgently needed maintenance and improvements. A pattern for a female kangaroo with her joey (baby) in her pouch is what I'm especially looking for - (then if possible to find kindly crocheters who would be willing to make and donate amigurumi Australian animals to our fundraising efforts.) I have a public Facebook page at "Shalom Valley Farm & Wildlife Sanctuary" if you're interested in seeing it. Sending you greetings and blessings.

  34. Sharon, I love your work. I stumbled across your site one day by accident and I absolutely adore your work; so much, in fact, that you taught me how to crochet. My first ever crochet project was with your crochet along elephant (and when i take pictures, i will post them to your site). I owe you a tremendous thank you because this is something that i have wanted to do for a really long time and you make it so understandable. With that being said, I have a question that you may or may not be able to answer; i tried locating an email address, but I could not find one, so I am leaving it here in hopes that you will see it. How well are you at looking at a picture of something and trying to replicate it without a pattern? I am obsessed with the Mario Bros. franchise; specifically, Princess Peach. I googled "paper mario shadow peach crochet" and an awesome Shadow Peach amigurumi came up, but, the person does not have a pattern, nor do they want to create it again. Would you be able to create a pattern by looking at the picture ( i would have attached it but, i could not find an email address for you ^_^). my email is mattpancake@yahoo.com if you choose to respond that way, if not, ill check back for responses. I know it is a weird inquiry, but I think what you do is fantastic and you might have the skill set to pull it off....that would make my day, you have no idea.

Thanks again for being wonderful and inspirational,

    Matthew

  39. I love your Little Bigfoot patterns! I've finish several of them and some of your other patterns and they look good but I have a couple of problems:

I know there is no specific "gauge" when making amigurumi but I've noticed that my animals end up either with holes so the stuffing shows or as a stiff kind of "shell" that doesn't stretch so I can't shape it. Do you have any suggestions that could help me fix this.

My bigger problem is that after I've sewn together 2 or 3 different pieces the inside of the animal becomes a hard ball with some areas on the surface becoming flat or puckered. I know this is probably from running the yarn in and out of the body. How do I fix this so that my figures keep their round, squishy shape?

If these questions are unclear let me know I will elaborate on them.

Thanks so much for all these wonderful patterns and especially your awesome video tutorials!

    1. Hi Krysia,
Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate that.

Yes, I do have a cat but I don't think it is what you're looking for. Mine is a version from the movie, "Coraline" and it's a bit creepy. If you go to my search bar, upper right corner, and type in Coraline it will come up there.
With that said, I do have a cuter, cuddly cat pattern planned. I'm just about through a puppy pattern now and my intention is to also make a cat. I'm working slower than normal these days so I can't give you any dates..
I'm so honored you will use these patterns to help homeless cats! That means so much to me. I just adopted a kitty 2 days ago. I will be announcing his arrival here with pictures on my blog in the next couple days!

  47. Hi Sharon,
I'm planning to make 2 of your dress me bunnies for my little cousins after I have completed my GCSE's. I am only able to get wool that is 100g and after looking at the wool you use I know that its not enough. I was wondering if there is any way of connected the wool when you run out without effect the final products.
    Many thanks
    Jenny

    1. absolutely.. you can add in new wool anytime along the way. When you make a single crochet and you have 2 loops on your hook, instead of yarning over and completing that stitch just pull the new wool through those 2 loops. Continue on, you can let go of the yarn tails after you make another stitch. Knot off the 2 yarn tails when you're done the row.

  49. Hi Sharon

Are your patterns in US terms or UK terms?

    Thanks,

    Sarah

    1. in US terms. All my patterns have an abbreviation chart that will explain each term. That is located near the top of the pattern page. Thanks for asking!

  50. You have lovely patterns, I wanted to join your site but I don't have a blog, that I use, so I don't know how I would join your site.

  52. Hi Sharon,
Thank you for your beautiful patterns.
I made several. And your videos are great.
Even fun to watch, if you do not make a pattern.
I'm looking for a "wishing well" pattern.
To put on the table or on the sideboard.
And where you can of course throw in money.
    Can you make a pattern?
    Greetings, Marleen

  53. Hi sharon! Im using an acrylic yarn, and it says that the recommended hook size is 4 mm is it okay to use a 3.5 hook? Will it make the amigurumi smaller than yours? Im kind of worried. Thanks.

  55. Sharon, I was wondering if the bunny clothes might fit this new little Puki doll I got. She is very tiny in the body and about 9 cm tall. I love all your patterns and watch them on facebook.

  56. Hi there. I just got a Pinterest post with what looks like one of your dragons, but on someone else's blog. I don't see you credited. https://stricken.neuenageldesign.ml/hakeln-sie-magical-fire-breathing-dragon-amigurumi-kostenlose-muster/

    1. hi Martha, thanks so much. Unfortunately that is a scam site and there's nothing I can do since it's not my photo. It is a dragon made from my pattern but not my photo. There's no link to download a pattern, all links there seem to be ads so I don't want to be clicking much, I tried one but my virus scanner warned me not to open it. I would highly suggest anyone reading this to not go there and click any links.
It's unfortunate that these sites are out there. Thanks so much for letting me know!
