Crochet Wuss Puss With Video Tutorial

Wuss Puss!
Such a fun cat to make. He is a character from the movie Coraline.
This is an old pattern of mine that I designed in 2011. I revised it to make a more user friendly pattern and also to provide a video tutorial. You can see all my Coraline videos in one playlist  here

Click here for the full video tutorial
Scroll down this page for the written pattern.

You can also make the cat in different colors or even brush the coat to get a pretty cool looking alley cat. I used a steel pet brush to get the yarn fuzzy. If you want a fuzzy cat use acrylic worsted weight yarn. Brush out the body before sewing on the legs. Brush out the head before adding the eyes and whiskers. You can brush the legs and tail after they've been sewn in place. I have a video tutorial on how to do this here

Supplies List:
3.7mm hook
acrylic, worsted weight medium #4 (Red Heart)
felt for eyes
yarn needle
10 -14 pipe cleaners
fabric tac or tacky glue
polyester stuffing
small pebbles or rice if you stuff with rice then you will also need a nylon sock

How to read the rows: Each row has a sequence as given below. For example 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that particular row. The number inside the parentheses ( ~ ) is the number of stitches you should have at the end of that particular row.

ch = chain
st = stitch
sc = single crochet
BLO = back loops only
2tog = 2 stitches together
ch1 = chain one
f/o = finish off

HEAD: Make 2 rows 3-17 ch1 and turn and start with the 2nd st from the hook
1) Chain 11
2) starting with the 2nd ch from the hook, 1sc in each ch (10)
3) 1sc in each st
4) 3sc in the first st, 1sc in the next 8st, 3sc in the last st (14)
5-6) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
7) 2sc in the first st, 1sc in the next 12st, 2sc in the last st (16)
8-9) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
10) 2tog then 1sc in the next 12st then 2tog (14)
11) 2tog then 1sc in the next 10st then 2tog (12)
12) 2tog then 1sc in the next 8st then 2tog (10)
13) 2tog then 1sc in the next 6st then 2tog (8)
14) 2tog then 1sc in the next 4st then 2tog (6)
15) 2tog then 1sc in the next 2st then 2tog (4)
16) 2tog then 2tog (2)
17) 1sc in each st
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing

NOSE: rows 3-12 remember to ch1, turn and start with the 2nd st from the hook
1) Chain 5
2) 1sc in each chain starting with the 2nd ch from the hook (4)
3-6) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
7) 2sc in the first st, 1sc in the next 2st, 2sc in the last st (6)
8) 1sc in each st
9) 3sc in the first st, 1sc in the next 4st, 3sc in the last st (10)
10) 1sc in each st
11) 3sc in the first st, 1sc in the next 8st, 3sc in the last st (14)
12) 1sc in each st
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing

EARS make 2: rows 3-9 remember to ch1, turn and start with the 2nd st from the hook
1) chain 7  begin with a long starting yarn tail that you will use to sew the ear to the head.
2) starting with the 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each ch (6)
3) 1sc in each st
4) 2tog then 1sc in the next 2st then 2tog (4)
5) 1sc in each st
6) 2tog twice (2)
7) 1sc in each st
8) 2tog (1)
9) 1sc in the remaining st
finish off making sure to pull the finishing knot very tight. Cut the yarn tail down leaving a short length. Fray the ends to give it a ratty sorta look.

Head and Nose Assembly:
I show how to sew this part a bit differently in the video tutorial then I explain here and I think the way I do it in the video is better but it's too hard to explain that in written form so here is the best way I can explain it.

Lay the nose over one of the head pieces, it will not fit length ways but the top part will fit end to end across the top of the head. Sew across the top starting at one end and work toward the center, leave an opening for stuffing, now start at the other end and towards the center. You want to stuff from the top downwards as you did for the head so leave an opening. Once the top is sewn in place start sewing around the nose pulling the nose downwards a bit (not too much) and make sure you keep the nose centered as you pull and sew. Stuff and shape and then close up that opening at the top. Whip stitch a nose in before sewing the 2 head pieces together.
Now you can sew the 2 head pieces together. Starting from the mouth area and work up. Leaving an opening on the top of the head for stuffing. You want to stuff from the top down towards the mouth. Close up once you have the stuffing in and the shape you want. Take a look at pictures of the cat to stuff and shape accordingly or view the video tutorial for this part if it's confusing.

EYES & WHISKERS:
It's best to put these in after the cat is fully assembled.

Cut eyes from felt. The shape is very important to get that creepy look. You can cut eyelids from black felt or outline the eye with yarn. I show how to do both these methods at the end of the video tutorial. If you use felt, carefully glue all the pieces together. You can glue the eye on first then add in the other pieces if that's easier too.

From trying different things I found that waxed dental floss makes the best whiskers. Cut about 2 feet, fold in half then fold in half again. Thread through a yarn needle and pull through the head where you want the whiskers to be. Repeat these steps for the other side. Bring both the floss ends you won't be using as whiskers out through a stitch in the head, knot them off and hide the knot inside the head. Cut the exposed ends to desired length, you should now have 4 whiskers on each side. View the video if this part is confusing.

BODY & Neck
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in the next st (18)
4) 1sc in the next 2st then 2sc in the next st (24)
5-7) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
8) 1sc in the next 2st then 2tog (18)
9-15) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
16) 1sc in the next 2st then 2sc in the next st (24)
17-18) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
19) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (18)
20) in the BLO 1sc then 2tog (12)
Stuff the body now. The head of the cat will be away from the body which makes it top heavy so to keep the cat from flopping over when you stand it up, I recommend stuffing the back end of the body with rice or some pebbles. I used pebbles and made sure they were large enough that none would work through the stitches of the body. If you use rice then put the rice inside a nylon stocking and knot the stocking off.
21) 1sc then 2tog (8) stuff more if needed
22-26) 1sc in each st for 5 rows
27) 1sc then 2sc in the next st (12)
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing
Fold 4 or 5 pipe cleaners in half and twist the one end to make a loop then push that loop into the body until it won't go in anymore. Cut the exposed ends, fold over and push into the neck.
Whip stitch the neck to the body.

LEGS make 4: start with a long yarn tail that you will use later to sew the legs to the body
1) magic circle or adjustable loop with 6sc (6)
2) 1sc then 2sc in next st (9)
3-6) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
7) 1sc then 2tog (6)
8-12) 1sc in each st for 5 rows
13) ch1 turn, 1sc in the next 4 st
14) ch1 turn, 1sc in the next 4st
finish off. do not close up the leg and do not stuff

ASSEMBLY OF LEGS:
One pipe cleaner per leg. Fold the pipe cleaner in half as pictured and push the bend into the leg until it reaches the top of the leg. Twist the two exposed pipe ends to make them one piece then follow the shape of the foot pad. Cut the excess off then whip stitch the foot pad and pipe cleaner together. Hide the yarn tail inside the leg.
Shape the body a bit more with your fingers. Work that stuffing around in there until you are happy with the shape. Pin the legs on as pictured and sew on. Whip stitch them to make the legs as pictured.

TAIL:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2-27) 1sc in each st for 26 rows
28) 2sc in each st
sl st next st and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing.

To Make The Tail Poseable:
Twist 2 or 3 pipe cleaners together, fold down the tips on one end and then push the folded ends into the tail, all the way to the tip, it might have difficulty reaching the tip so view the video on how to get it to the end. Now fold the other ends of the pipe cleaners and tuck inside the tail. Now you can sew to the back of the body as pictured. Tack the tail to the body with a couple of stitches to hold it in an upright position.
