Miniature Purple Panda Crochet Thread Pattern

Make this tiny miniature purple panda using punch embroidery thread. Use a different color to make a Teddy Bear.

What I used to make the Purple Panda:
Purple and White Acrylic Punch Embroidery Thread
Black Sewing Thread
1.25 mm Steel Hook Sewing Needle Medium Sized Eyelet
Polyester Stuffing
Fine Tip Black Felt Pen
Steel Nap Raiser (hard bristled toothbrush would work too)
Pliers to help pull the sewing needle through
Optional - Dental Floss

Special notes: Punch Embroidery thread breaks easily if you pull just a bit too hard on it. I sewed the pieces together with thread tails from each piece which worked fine for me but you could also use dental floss to sew the pieces together. The pieces will lose shape as you work with them but are easily put back into shape by working at them with your fingers.

I worked in continuous rounds with a 1.25 mm steel hook. Each row has a sequence as given below. For example 1sc then 2sc in next st means repeat that sequence 1sc then 2sc in next st followed by 1sc then 2sc in next st over and over to the end of that particular row. Sew the pieces together in the order given.  Also see picture at bottom of pattern for same bear made with cotton crochet thread #10.

st = stitch
sc = single crochet
2tog = 2 stitches together
sl st = slip stitch
f/o = finish off

HEAD: with white
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st then 2sc in next st (24)
5-9) 1sc in each st for 5 rows
10) 1sc in next 4st then 2tog (20)
11) 1sc in next 3st then 2tog (16)
12) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (12)
13) 2tog 6 times (6)
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Brush the head to get a fuzzy coat.

BODY: starting with white
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4-7) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
8) 1sc then 2tog (12)
9) switch to purple on first st then 1sc in next 11st (12)
10) 1sc in each st
knot off the color changes then stuff the body
11) 1sc then 2tog (8)

f/o and hide thread tail in body. Brush body then sew head and body together. I found going right through the body and then right back up through the head then repeating a few times holds the two pieces together just fine. These are not to be given to small children though due to choking hazards. Brush head and body again.

LEGS: with purple
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in each st
4) 2tog 3 times then 1sc in next 6st (9)
5) 2tog 3 times then 1sc in next 3st (6)
lightly stuff foot. You will need to shape the foot once you are done with the leg part. Shape foot and add a stitch to hold the foot shape if needed.
6-9) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
10) 2tog 2 times then sl st across to close up the top of the leg.
No need to stuff leg. f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. You only need one long tail for sewing so once you are done the 2nd leg hide that thread tail inside leg when done.
Brush legs to get a fuzzy coat. Sew one leg on then sew 2nd leg on, pull them tight together and sew in a manner that will give you jointed legs if you want the legs to move. Brush the legs again when all done

ARMS: with purple
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2-8) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. No need to stuff arms.
Brush arms to get a fuzzy coat then sew the arms to the top of the body just under the head. Brush again once done with the sewing.

Ears: with purple
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) ch1 and turn. 2sc in each st
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew ears on after you have the legs and arms sewn on. Brush the head again before sewing ears on. Do not brush the ears.

Muzzle: with white
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
sl st next st and f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Using black sewing thread, embroider a nose in place.
Brush the head again before sewing muzzle on. Shape the muzzle as you sew it in place. Do not brush the muzzle.

EYE PATCHES: with purple
1) magic circle with 4sc(4)
2) sl st to join
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing. Stretch the patch into a more oval shape. Pin in place, use the pins to spread out the shape and then to hold the shape while you sew the patch in. I found this part a bit tricky but I think that was because the thread tails are too thick for this particular job. You could use invisible sewing thread and a smaller sewing needle to sew the patches in, that might make the job go smoother. Once you are done with sewing the patches on, use a fine tipped permanent black felt pen and dot in the eyes. You could also use a toothpick and black craft paint and dot the eyes in that way too. Whatever works.

TAIL: with purple
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 1sc in each st
f/o leaving a long tail for sewing and sew tail in place.

  4. I totally understand why you don't want to allow copying and pasting of pattern but it does make it more difficult to be able to use it offline. Would like the option of being able to put it into my evernote so I can work on the pattern when I am away from the internet access in my back yard. Love the pattern and thanks for the freebie though

    1. The only crochet thread I tried it with was the #10 and that is the blue panda pictured.. the link to his modifications is just above the last photo in the pattern above. It worked great with the punch embroidery thread which is pretty fine so I'm sure it would work with fine crochet thread too

  13. You are the only person that has a free pattern using this material... Do you have any more patterns using thread?? :)

    1. not really any stand alone patterns like this one. I used this thread to follow a couple of my other regular sized patterns and made a tiny Totoro, a tiny bunny using my mouse pattern and also a tiny brown bear using this panda pattern. I can't link them here but just scroll up and look to the right side of the page for the label list of patterns and click on the label "Miniature" and the thread posts I've written will come up for you

    1. Hi there.. for these little ones I use a hard toothbrush or a nail brush. I also have a special tool for this called a nap raiser but those 2 brushes I said first will work fine as long as you are using acrylic thread.

      Thanks for asking!

  15. Just thought you might like to know that you can get your punch threads and hooks and nap raiser from this site that is designed to suppy the tiny tiny crocheted critters-- I buy from her all the time
