st = stitch
sc = single crochet
2tog = 2 stitches together
ch1 = chain one
sl st = slip stitch

Special notes: I worked in continuous rounds with a 3.75mm hook and worsted weight yarn medium #4. Have any questions or if you come across a mistake in the pattern please leave a message in the comment section below. I found those eyes in a thrift store and I believe they are between 9-10mm. I normally use 7 or 8mm eyes for the Little Bigfoot characters

HEAD:
Remember if you use safety eyes to put them in before closing up the head.

1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4) 3sc in first st, 1sc in next 8st, 3sc in next st, 1sc in last 8st (22)
5) 1sc in each st
6) 2sc in first st, 1sc in next 10st, 2sc in next st, 1sc in last 10st (24)
7-10) 1sc in each st for 4 rows
11) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (18)
12)1sc then 2tog (12)
stuff head while pushing the stuffing into the sides of the head as you stuff
13) 2tog 6times (6) Finish off

TRUNK:
1) magic circle with 4sc (4)
2-8) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
9) 1sc then 2sc in next st (6)
10) sl st into next st and finish off. Leave long tail for sewing.
bring tail through the trunk and pull until you have the shape you want for the trunk. Knot off the end to hold shape.

BASE for TRUNK:
1) magic circle with 6sc
2) sl st into next st and finish off.

This is optional. You can sew the trunk as is to the face but I made a little base for the end of the trunk which I sewed on the base of the trunk then sewed the entire thing to the face. I found it looked better with the base on it.

BODY:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st (18)
4) 1sc in next 2st, 2sc in next st 24)
5-7) 1sc in each st for 3 rows
8) 1sc in next 2st then 2tog (18)
9) 1sc in each st
10) 1sc then 2tog (12)
stuff body
11) 2tog 6 times , sl st into next st and finish off (6) leave long tail for sewing. Sew head and body together

LEGS:
1) Magic circle with 6sc 6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
4-6) 1sc in each for 3 rows
7) 2tog 4 times, 1sc in next 10st (14)
8) 2tog 5 times, 1sc in last 4st (9)
stuff foot. No need to stuff legs
9-13) 1sc in each for 5 rows (9) sl st into next st and finish off. Leave long tail for sewing

ARMS:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3-4) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
5) 2tog 3 times, 1sc in last 6st (9)
6) 2tog 3 times, 1sc in last 3st (6)
stuff hand
7-10) 1sc in each st for 4 rows. No need to stuff arms. sl st into next st and finish off, leave long tail for sewing. Sew to body just under the head

EARS:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) ch1 turn, 2sc in next 5st (10)
3) ch1 turn, 2sc in next 10st (20)
4) ch1 turn, 2sc in next 20st (40)
5) 1sc in each st (40) finish off, leave long tail for sewing.

I show how to do the ears in the video tutorial. But I'll try to explain here. Take the open ends of the ear (half circle) and point the ends away from the front side of the ear. Sew the edges of those ends together. Thread the tail of the yarn from the middle of the ear and out through the side and pull. This will shrink up the ear and give it some shape. Continue to shape ear until you are happy with it. Sew edge piece that you just sewed together to the head. See pictures below.

    1. thank you.. I found those in a thrift store. I've been trying to find more like them but so far no luck. There are similar types/shape in ebay called Character Eyes and I just found some other eyes kinda similar called Fantasy Eyes by Beary Cheap Bear Supplies online but so far nothing exactly like the ones I used in the elephant...

  5. I loooove this elephant and your clear instruction on how to make this. This cutie is my first project and I am sure there will follow much more. I am not familiar with sewibg, so is there a possibility to show how to sew the body parts together in a neat and correct way?
    Love from the Netherlands and keep up the good work!

    1. Hi Cynthia, there is a video tutorial that follows along with this pattern. The link to that is right above the pattern itself, just above the word "Head"

      I do plan on putting a tutorial together on just sewing amis together but not sure when I'll get that done. But for now I hope the Elephant video helps.

      Thanks for the message!

  8. I could sure use some help. I'm making my first miniature. It's a hinged teddy bear, maybe 3 inches tall. I have crocheted each piece and they look pretty good. I put them all together and it's awful. I'm a sloppy "sew it together" person. Do you have any instructions for putting them together. I mean just putting the head on the body looks horrible, even if I didn't make it hinged my work is horrible. The pieces really do look great. etc. etc, etc, lol Help

  9. OMG - I made this Elephant as my first ever project since I found out I am going to be a grandma. It came out absolutely beautiful. Thank you, thank you, thank you Sharon for super duper easy to follow instructions. Never held a crochet hook in my hands in my life and I surprised my ownself as to how easy it was. Truth be told I had issues with making a Trunk. Made three different trunks since I was not happy with my own creation and finally I nailed it. It is perfect now. Learned a lot about yarns. Decided to go with organic 100% cotton yarn. Internet indeed is a wealth of knowledge with free help/assistance by people like you. THANK YOU, again...

  10. I love your video. It is very clear. I tried to make a different elephant and I must have done something wrong. I wound up with a flat disk instead of a nice round head like your. Thanks I will crochet this for my great grand daughter.

  11. I love this little elephant, and the tutorial and video are both excellent. I just thought that you would like to know that the link from YouTube to this page is a broken link.

    Thanks for the time, effort and skill involved in making these patterns available.
