Rodrick Free Crochet Pattern

I designed this doll and his brother Greg (pattern here) for my kids. I am sharing the patterns with you, I hope you enjoy! These make  a great gift for any Diary of a Wimpy Kid fan.

st = stitch
sc = single crochet
BLO = back loops only
2tog = 2 stitches together
ch1 = chain one

Special notes: I worked in continuous rounds with a 3.75mm hook and worsted weight yarn. Have any questions or if you come across a mistake in the pattern please leave a message in the comment section below.

HEAD:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2) 2sc in each st (12)
3) 1sc then 2sc in the next st (18)
4) 2sc then 2sc in the next st (24)
5) 3sc then 2sc in the next st (30)
6) 4sc then 2sc in the next st (36)
7) 5sc then 2sc in the next st (42)
8-14) 1sc in each st for 7 rows
15) 1sc in the next 2 st then 2tog (32)
16) 1sc in each st for 1 row
17) 1sc in the next 2 st then 2tog (24)
18+) 1sc then 2 tog until you are left with 8 st (8)
Before the hole gets too small stuff and shape head
Continue on with the neck
NECK:
1-3) 1sc in each st for 3 rows (8)
BODY:

1) 2sc in each st (16)
2) 1sc in the next 3 st then 2sc in the 4th st (20)
3-4) 1sc in each st for 2 rows
5) 1sc in the next 9 st the 2sc in the 10th st (do this twice) (22)
6-13) 1sc in each st for 8 rows
14-16) 1sc in the FLO for 3 rows
finish off
By crocheting in the front loops for the last 3 rows you created edges on the inside as pictured below. This is where you insert black. Use the edge that's furthest from you when you look inside.

With Black:

1) Insert and sc in each loop (22)
The line inside you are about to crochet into does not appear even but it will even out when you crochet the one loop to the next. (enlarge the picture above by clicking on it to see what I mean).
2+) In the BLO, 2tog until you close the gap.
 Remember to finish stuffing the body before you close up the hole
(Here I lost my 3.75mm hook so I started to use a 4mm hook and did so to the end of the doll).

LEGS WITH BLACK:
1) Magic circle with 6sc (6)
2-13) 1sc in each st for 12 rows
14) 1sc in the next 5 st switch to white on the last stitch
now with white (6)
15) 2sc in each st (12)
16) 1sc then 2sc in next st (18)
17) 1sc in each st
18) 1sc in the BLO for 1 row (18)
19) In the BLO 2tog over the next 12 st

Assembling of Legs:
Bend a pipe cleaner so 2 halves are same length as leg and wrap the remaining pipe around finger as pictured below. Insert into leg and shape foot as desired. Fiddle around with it until you are happy with the shape and also the leg should stand up on it's own. Cut a piece of white felt and hot glue it to bottom of foot.

ARMS with White:
1) magic circle with 6sc (6)
2-14) Isc in each st for 13 rows (6)
15) 2sc in each st (12)
16) 1sc in next 2 st then 2tog (9)
Optional, if you want bendable arms the insert pipe cleaner as pictured. If not then continue on with row 17+ but DO NOT stuff.
17+)1sc the 2tog until you close the gap. Finish off and leave long tail for sewing and shaping hand.

EARS:
1) Magic circle 4. Do not join. ch1 and turn. (4)
2) 1sc then 2sc in the next 2 st then 1sc in last st. ch1 and turn. (6)
3) 1sc in next 2 st then 2sc in the next 2st then 1sc in the last 2 st (8)
Finish off. Leave long tail for sewing.

NOSE:
1) magic circle 4 (4)
2) 2sc in each st (8)
3-4) 1sc in each st for 2 rows

leave a long tail and cut
Stuff nose. Weave the end of the tail in and out around the open edge of the nose and then pull until the gap closes up. Sew onto face

The face is up to you, there are many different ways to make the mouth and eyebrows depending on the kind of look you want the doll to have. I sewed in 5 lengths of yarn across the head and cut them short. The hair pieces stand up nice on their own but you should put in some clear drying glue or fabric stiffener to keep the ends from fraying.

I hope you  enjoyed this pattern!
Why donating is important and my thank you here.

  1. This is great! I've just started the pattern yesterday, and in about only an hour, I was able to complete the head,neck and body. I'm just getting started on the arms now. I'm thinking the dolls along with the book will make a great Christmas gift.

    I'll Post my pics along the way on my Ravelry page

  5. Hello. I first would like to say that these dolls are too adorable and you have amazing talent. :-). I was wondering if you could help me in what kind of eyes you used in this pattern. It wasn't stated and I think they are the perfect size and shape! Hehehe. Thank you kindly. - Teshia

    1. Hello, you're welcome and thank you for taking the time to write. I actually used round buttons since I had no eyes at the time. I believe they are 8mm. I show how I installed them in the video.. if not Rodrick's video then for sure in Greg's. I wish I had a more definite answer for you! I was still kinda new to putting patterns together for others to use at the time I made these ones. I hope that helps and if there's anything else, don't hesitate to ask :)

      Happy Crocheting!!

  7. Hello :-)
    I was wondering if you were willing to post and share the pattern for Rowley? He and Greg are my son's favorites. I am almost done completing Greg for him. He is going to love these! If you do decide to post Rowley's pattern, it is greatly appreciated along with the others that you have posted for all to make. Keep on posting, as I love looking at your amazing work along with your great and very helpful tutorials. Again, if you do decide to post Rowley, thank you kindly. Have a great day! :-)- Teshia

    1. Hello Teshia, I was just thinking of him yesterday. I am willing to share. I have to re-do or re-create the one I made for my daughter since I didn't take notes while I made him. But it is coming, can't say exactly when. I'll post back when I start that project.

      Thank you for the message! I appreciate the kind comments :)

      Hopefully I'll get back to you soon,

      Sharon
